View Full Version : Post Season Baseball and a Gambler's Tale

Major League Baseball commences their post season tomorrow (9-30-03) which means it's time for some fun. I enjoy gambling on post season baseball and usually start from the first game and ride it till the end of the "World Series". This thread will chronicle my choices and progress throughout the 2003 baseball post season. A "reality" thread in a sense that people can see a gambler and the mindset that goes into this "hobby" along with their winnings and losses. I will attempt to post ALL "picks" before each game begins and will include the amount wagered and what the "odds" and "lines" are to each respective game. If any other gamblers would like to participate as well please feel free. While I usually "bet" until there is a M.L.B Champion I may stop at anytime due to excessive losses or any other unforeseen event.
Please keep this thread to it's topic, thank you.
I am beginning with $1,000.
Pick's for 9-30-03:
1.) New York Yankees (straight): Odds to be announced tomorrow
2.) New York Yankees (to win the current series): Odds to be announced tomorrow
3.) San Francisco Giants (to win the current series): Odds to be announced tomorrow
* I have to call these picks into the office at noon tomorrow while I am on the road. I will post the odds to my choices as soon as I arrive home. One thing for sure is that all three picks will be VERY expensive. Unlike most other sports, the casinos (or bookies) use the "odds" system opposed to a "sport's line". For example, in my first bet I choose the New York Yankees to win their series against the Minnesota Twins. Easy pick? Sure. Risky? VERY! I will most likely have to risk $300 to win $100 for my Yankees' "pick". The same system goes for the regular games as well. Another example would be the Oakland Athletics against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. A gambler would most likely have a "pick-em" line ($100 to win $100) if Pedro Martinez is NOT pitching now if Pedro Martinez IS pitching you would probably be looking at $250 to win $100. The quality of the starting pitcher in post season baseball will greatly effect the "odds" of that particular game. You have to pay (risk) large amounts for heavy favorites instead of giving up points or runs. Lose a handful of those pricey choices and you'll be out of the loop in no time.

the twins remind me an awful lot of the the angels of last year...not many big homerun hitters, good bullpen, little playoff experience, and given no chance to beat the yanks...they acquired shannon stewart who is a good player to have setting the table for the rest of thier hitters...with the yankee starters getting older this could be more interesting that people think

no its not
sorry for your loss but those odds are too much too lay on a favorite....betting 300/100 is the equivalent of putting all your eggs in one basket
bet the two underdogs each day and hope to split and win money...if you lose both you would only lose 2 times the unit bet whereas a loss on a 3 to 1 bet already puts you behind that
Another thing: never tell people what you are betting....it will lose...i have done a similar thing during the basketball season and posted it here...I lost everything I said i was gonna do...i'll try to find the thread

I was absolutely livid early this afternoon to find out the "office" is not opened until 5 p.m on weeknights and 11 a.m on weekends. This was awful timing being that the Yankees "conveniently" lost but it is the truth. All bets concerning games before 5 p.m (except weekends) have to be called in the night before. At least it looks like the Giants pick would have come in. I will make sure this mistake on my behalf will not happen again. For the record this blunder is gonna end up costing me because the series bets are more than likely to hit. I wasn't planning on taking tonight's game but due to the circumstances I better go check out the information, be back later with my pick.

PLEASE keep to the topic, I don't want this thread spinning all over.
I just called in tonight's action.
Pick's for 9-30-03:
Atlanta Braves: $150 to win $100
Atlanta Braves Vs. Chicago Cubs - Over 8 1/2 runs: $110 to win $100
* The over/under wager is simple. The line for tonight's game is 8 1/2 runs. You choose above or below the line given (in this game 8 1/2).

Let this be a lesson to all how "silly" little fuck ups the likes of mine today can be financially devastating. An important rule all must follow is stick to your original choices and NEVER let circumstance force you to make wagers you otherwise would have not placed.
If not for my irresponsibility my original bets would have had me at minus $65.
Since I fucked that up by not knowing to call the night before (for the record 9 out of 10 offices are open for post season day games) I broke an important rule and I just bet on what was available which was tonight's Atlanta game. The result is a $260 loss.
Now this puts me in an awful situation and I'll tell you why. There is one game tomorrow night, Oakland A's Vs. Boston Red Sox and Pedro Martinez is pitching for the Red Sox. I LOVE Boston in this game but it will cost a King's ransom to choose Boston due to their pitcher who is basically a living legend at 31 years of age. Basically what I am trying to say is that if Boston loses tomorrow night it will be very costly, combine that with tonight's debacle and we may be looking at half of my bank gone. Always remember that in order to win one must keep their composure and understand that there will be days like this. Let's just hope for my sake not to many more!

Great thread idea. We should start one of these for Sunday football (if someone hasn't already!).
It's so hard to bet on a favorite when you have to lay down $10 to win $5. Why bet at all in a game like that?

I dont think Boston should be a big favorite inthis game. Pedro isnt clutch in the Post season, and its in Oakland against another great pitcher. Pedros big game history is avg . Hes 500 against the yanks and not exactly automatic in the post season.

You couldn't be more wrong. Pedro Martinez has been virtually untouchable in every post season game he has played in. In four appearances, he's 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA. His 6 scoreless innings in a decisive game 5 against the Cleveland Indians in 1999 personally cost me 5 dimes and he was HURT during that gem.

Coincidentally I just checked and with several casinos (via the web) and tomorrow's line has just been released. Seems I may have over estimated, the line opened at:
Boston Red Sox: 143 Over/Under: 7
This means it is $143 to win $100 if you choose the Boston Red Sox.
If you choose the Oakland Athletics it will be $100 to win $143.
With the fair price I'm thinking I may go "balls to the wall" early and try to score $286 to win $200. This will be a difficult decision.

Steels,
you do have a big set and most people would never post their gambling picks! Reason being it's a game 'in reality' you can't win and most people feel "crappy and angry" when they lose.
If you do win you will never be satisfied and it's a 99.9% guarantee that you'll give it back and 'then some' trying to win again.
As long as your having a little fun, keep it in check and don't spend the rent money, then that seems to be okay. A phonecall is a little easier than driving 3hours down to Atlantic City.

Funkman: I am more responsible then you may think. Not that it matters but the $1000 I am playing with is "House" money I won from the $2,500 I hit at the half-time pool during the last Super Bowl.
You obviously know what your talking about because most gamblers just keep "betting" until they eventually lose. However this is not my practice. I bet during the post seasons of football and baseball then collect or pay up from there.
Why did you just put yesterdays picks on here? or are they today's? If so you lost the Cubs already. and Pedro just gave up 2 runs, i told you you cant count on him in the post season
You based your opinion on facts that I EFFICIENTLY and COMPLETELY proved were FALSE. You keep stupidly bitching about some phantom "Pedro Martinez" post season record that I PROVED time and again is FALSE! JUST LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE I PROVIDED VIA THE HYPERLINKS! Now are you brain-dead or are you now telling me "I told you so" based on the fictitious post season past you assumed Pedro Martinez had? Do I have to explain how stupid this looks. Lastly he just got lit up for 3 runs not 2.
This is definitely very bad and I will most likely drop $720 as a grand total for the 2 days. Before Pedro got lit up he threw like 7 straight balls (while it was still 1-0) and I picked up my phone and called my friend and told him "I'm fucked, he's gonna get lit up right now" 120 seconds later he started getting tattooed and gave up 3 runs. If your gonna go out you might as well go out riding the arm of Perdo Martinez. By the way his pitch count is at 68 pitches at the end of the 4th. This is looking terribly grim.
Oh wait......Home Run Boston.....3-2.
Still this is not good though.

No, because like i said, he not lights out in the post season. Its what i remember from watching the guy. He did good against Clemens and that relief game. Those are the games that keep his ERA down. the other games he got touched up. Thats what i remember. That combined with a shaky season this year, playing in Oakland and pitching against Hudson are all reasons to not think hes a lock for a win tonight. Thats what I think. He's lucky if he makes it to the 7th tongiht. Sorry dude.

The Boston Red Sox lost in the 12th inning. I have lost a total of $720 and I'm going to officially bow out. I still have another $280 but I have been losing under grueling circumstances and that can take a toll on a person when it happens in every game he or she bets. Losing straight up is easy, losing when fucked up things happen is actually much worse than losing the money itself. I know this is hard for most to understand but it is so very true. While I'm playing with "house" money it is still MONEY and this is just a bona fide losing streak hence me stopping now. I will say I am VERY disappointed I couldn't get a few weeks worth of fun action out of it. Losses like this are only a part of the game.

It never ceases to amaze me how 'when gambling' people wind up on the losing end of a 50/50 chance. Whether you bet the point spread or the over/under, you either wind up on top or below the spread or under/over amount.
Of course anytime you begin to parlay or tease then you are decreasing your chances.
Honestly, sorry to hear it Steels. I don't like to see anyone lose like that! What comes to my mind when that happens is maybe you should make your picks and then 'bet the other way'. When you look back you would have never lost. But i realize noone ever uses this philosophy and i think because you kick yourself when you go with who you will think win but you would 'really' kick yourself if you picked a winner but bet on the other guy.
I'm convinced that looking at all the statistics in the world draws very little benefit if any at all when gambling, so why waste the time. If your gonna do it go with your gut, or the color of the teams uniform.
