View Full Version : Anyone ever take a Civil Service exam?

Hey yall. I'm scheduled to take a civil service exam in NY state. I'm trying to get a job there becoming an Aide to developmentally challenged people.

Now I've heard there is a book I can study to help me pass. But my question is does anyone know what is on these tests? I mean if it's specialized questions about helping mentally challenged people then I want to study. But if it's just a basic skill test, then I am not worried.

It doesn't tell me to study a special book. I heard this from a friend who works there.

But I would think that if I was meant to know something special, I would be told to study it, no? I may be a little too paranoid, but this is important to me and I really want to go in there and get a good score. I'm not worried about the inteview honestly.

I have a friend who took it and he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer and he passed it. But you may want to look into what the book covers and see if it is actually worth it.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks Reef. I keep from a friend who works there that they need better employees because the ones there are lazy and hardly speak English. So I'm thinking if they can pass how can I fail? But I just want to cover all bases.

I will obviously call tomorrow. Just wanted some quick background from anyone in here who might have taken a similar civil service test. NY state especially.

Thanks all. And monsterone, I was already at that site, as well as NY state's site for the office of Developmentally Challenged or whatever it said on the form letter. I hope all my questions can get answered tomorrow.

Yea I have taken several civil service exams and if you're not a total idiot and you manage your time, you should pass. They usually divide the test like the SAT between verbal and math. The math is rudimentary. They will have things like number sequence and word problems. The verbal is like the things you would see on the SAT. Analogies and things of the such.

You are more than qualified!!!!

Seriously, most civil service exams are basic intelligence tests. I took mine many, many, many years ago and looking at the caliber of some of the new people on my old job, you should have nothing what so ever to be worried about!!

Good luck, Moe...you'll do fine!!!

...ouch. man, ,that was really uncalled for. True, but uncalled for! Rocout is also right; that sounds like a civil service test to me. Best of luck Moe.

civil service exams are designed for retards.

Am I the only person who took the ASVAB?

No. I took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery too. Didn't matter. I was going to be an engineer anyway.

I took a civil service test almost 13 years ago. Part of it was administrative, the other part was job specific. I wish I had known that because I would have studied up on the job specific stuff. Good luck.
