so the family computer, downstairs, is hooked up to the internet. i just made my room cable ready and would like to hook my computer, upstairs, up online.
i have my own modem, but i am having a few issues. when i try to set up the software, the second account on a single account won't go through. i'm using roadrunner; any loopholes?
i would like to avoid getting a wireless lan hub, since i have the modem already. is it possible?
there hasn't been too much homework done on this effort, so i was hoping to get a few pointers.

You need a hub. You can't put two modems on. If you already have a hub and it's a newer mac, just get an airport.

Not STRICTLY correct - you do want a hub and do not want to put up a second modem - you can put up a second modem, but your provider will require you get a second account, and of course will charge you double....

thanks for the help so far guys. i figure i'll have to spend about $100 on hub/ wireless adapter. oh well...
here's my second dilemma- the software needed for roadrunner has to be registered. a $50 fee and $10 a month. how do i get around that?

Don't use their software?
I use Cablevision, so I can't say 100%

find out what this software is. If it's pppoe (a commercial version is called winpoet) most hub/routers, like Linksys, will emulate that for you. Try poking around here for more info on your specific provider (they also allow for anonymous posting of questions)
BroadBandReports (http://www.broadbandreports.com/)
go to forums on left side, then select your isp/broadband provider and look around

Yeah, get a Linksys Wireless Broadband Router. (I've seen it for around $50 for 802.11b, a little more for the 802.11g (faster wireless speed, but if it's just for web surfing and small file transfer, you won't need it)
http://www.linksys.com/products/image180/befw11s4_v4.jpg
You can hook up 4 computers with CAT5 wire (Lan cables, with that 8 wire wider than a phone plug plug)
You can also use it with wireless LAN cards (including apple's Airport cards, I've done it. you won't need the actual Airport base)
You'll only need one IP address from your ISP and the Router will act as a Firewall. Really easy to set up and you don't need software, just a browser.

I would recommend trainig a monkey to ride a bicycle. It's a little frustrating at first, but once you get him up and running he's faster than any broadband connection will ever be.

So the parent company of Whack and MonkeyNet would be Whack the Monkey??

Science sure knows how to make things sound important.
I forget which comedian said it [Maher? Miller?]:
"You're not 'Surfing' the 'Net.' You're Alone and you're Typing" Hilarious and true.
"Broadband Networking" isn't that "Hooking Two computers together with Cable" ?
And before you answer, realize I'm joking. Badly.
