When I asked my company two months ago if it was OK to relocate to Massachusetts, they said "Sure. You're still living in your territory so we don't see any problems with that." So I thought every thing was a-ok. When they named me "Salesperson of the Quarter" for Q3, I thought "Not bad. Things are good. I've got a new house, a beautiful wife with a beautiful daughter, with the cherry on the cake being a son due to arrive on Christmas Day!"
Everything going according to plan...until this morning.
My company, in a cost cutting move, fired the entire outside sales force leaving me high and dry. I HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THIS HOUSE FOR LESS THAN 2 WEEKS and they fire me and 8 other people without any word of warning!!! These scumbags knew this was coming. This is not something that one just decides to do on a whim.
I'm 39. Gonna be 40 in 2 months. I hate looking for a new employment. Keep a good thought for me and my family.
This sucks.
All I can hope is that divine retribution in the form of boils and Aids is inflicted on those responsible.

James...that has got to be one of the most nauseating things I've ever heard. Like you said, something like this doesn't happen spur-of-the-moment...how does a person of any human decency allow an employee/colleague to buy a home & move his soon-to-be-expanding family without even a subtle hint that "things aren't going that well around here." What kind of sales were you in, if I may be so bold as to ask...software, pharmaceutical, industrial?
Best of luck to you in your search for new employment...God Bless you & your family, bro.

James I'm so sorry to hear that. I was hoping for the best for you and your family after reading of your move. I don't doubt for one second that your company knew in advance what was coming down the road. Someone could have pulled you aside and told you to hold off on the move or something without so much as revealing what was happening.
In my company I knew in advance that people from the company who took us over were getting laid off and I was sick to my stomach with the thought that I knew these peoples fates. I was so tempted to find someone at that company to tell them the truth, but I was also fearful of my own job. But having gone through that I am sure that at least some people in your company who knew you were making this kind of a move knew what your fate with the company was and they did nothing. It's horrible.
I sincerely hope everything works out.

Thank you all for your good thoughts. Talking with my wife about this, we both are taking the positive track. I know there is something better out there...I know I'll find it - just hopefully before the severance runs out.

James,
thats been my own personal nightmare that I keep imagining happening to me and it scares the shit out of me! I think corporate America better wake up and not keep doing this to us people because our loyalty to them is wearing dangerously thin. My own experiece is that when one door closes, it makes room for another to open. I hope your door opens to something bigger and better! Good luck!!

James,
Ver Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I've seen a similar situation with the Colgate Palmolive company back in the late 80's. A hundred or so employees that worked at the Jersey City plant(which was closing) were offered positions in the Kansas City plant and took them. six months to a year after they settled at the new location they were all laid off.
I said the same exact thing "the company knew they were going to layoff, why did they let these people go through with the re-location"
Over the years i've grown to realize is Management are unable to let you know you are gonna be laid off. I think the main reason is once the worker finds out there will be 'poor production" and possible acts of sabotage against the company.
Colgate's situation was a little different because they were closing a Plant and they made everyone aware of it from 1 to 3 years in advance, depending on your seniority.
In the corporate world the questions that i learned never gets answered is " are there going to be layoffs?" or "will i be laid off?"
BEST OF LUCK to you and your family!

James,
If it's Medical Sales, from the iota I know about it, demand will never cease.
I tell you this sounds like a Perfect call for the show. I imagine the phones just exploding with people with similar tales.
And hey, you never know, people are listening. I heard someone call a radio show [someone from NY help me, it might have been limbaugh or hannity or hell even lynn samueals, it was years ago, maybe you heard it], they told a similar story, and long story short, the guy had like two standing job offers by the end of the show from people who heard him, and heard his story. He told it just like James did, meaning well, and people could just hear that the guy was a winner.
You'll be fine. That doesn't stop the Suckiness from Sucking, it just Sucks. But, it will be fine.
Med sales? Man, I hear there's TONS of money in it for science-nerds like me.

Ok sorry I'm back but this stuff really pisses me off.
Blame my Dad; he was so financially conservative it was rediculous, but he held onto his money. I got so many lectures about money. The day I showed him my first credit card, he sat me down and literally, on paper, showed me how I was about to destroy my life; how you can be 22 years old and 15K in the Hole. At 24.99% APR.
Anyway, what I'm think is: you said you've only been living in the house for two weeks? Did you buy the house on some concrete 'promise' [whatever the hell they call it] that said Sales Force would be around? I'm wording this badly.
I don't know the details, and theyre none of my business. But if the purchase of the house is the issue, maybe consult a lawyer? I mean if the situation is you're stuck with this house. Will you have to re-locate?
Now I'm so confused I forget the details of the post. Ugh.

I'm so sory James. I don't know if this helps but if you're in medical sales, check out Pfizer and U.S. Surgical -- both are in CT.

***UPDATE***
Well, it's been a little over 2 months since I was laid off but the good news is that I'm starting a new job next week. The base salary isn't as good as my previous position but the potential to make good commission money is there. So here's a big "FUCK YOU" to that wolf who was hanging around my door.
Cool thing is that I'll be working about 4 miles from my house so the commute will be next to nothing and I can put all of my suits into storage since it is a casual office.
Will it work out? Who knows. After what happened to me 2 months ago I'll never be entirely comfortable thinking about career stability. However, I'm ready to be working again.
One thing I will miss is how easy it is to claim unemployment benefits in New York State. A form on the internet that takes 20 seconds to fill out and the check comes 3 days later. Nice. More importantly however, I will miss all the time I have had to spend with my wife and daughter these past 2 months. In that respect, the layoff couldn't have come at a better time.
Anyway, thanks again to all of you for your good wishes and support.
