It never ceases to amaze me when I see a semi-normal looking person rummaging through the garbage.

I'm not talking about some poor soul searching for something to eat...I'm talking about these crazy peope who rummage through the garbage searching for treasure (like a newspaper!) If you ride the subways in NY, you know what I'm talking about.

I see them at sporting events too, rummaging through the post game debris. My favorite is a crazy woman I refer to as the Yankee scavenger. She will pick up anything that is not bolted to the floor - ticket stubs, newspapers, little random pieces of paper. She examines it all so carefully and then places it in her bag.

Is there a name for this mental illness? What's it all about?

One of the owners of the club where I work goes dumpster diving for discarded "treasures". His home is a hodgepodge of found fixtures, switchplates and the like. The first time I was taken there he asked ,"What do you think of my lawn"?
I looked to my boss for a tactful answer. He replied,"Doc, there isn't a blade of grass here".
-"and it didn't cost me anything",the multi millionaire boasted.
He's a surgeon, I shudder to think how he utilizes the "used gloves".

we lived in the 4story apartment building my grandfather owned and he lived on the first floor. he would go through all the garbage before it was put out and pick out every bit of food and give it to the stray dogs and the pigeons. i don't believe there was any mental illness, he hated to see food wasted.
He was Catholic at one point and during World War I he was in the army and had to guard(from what i understand was the place where the Pope was residing or some high priests) He saw how the priests lived such a good life and the people around were poor and had very little. So he converted to Protestant. His brother wound up getting killed on Armistice Day.

Maybe OCD?

Or if they're looking for food, Prader-willi syndrome?

Or perhaps just poverty?

Sounds nutty to me.
