This IS old school because the Murph has been with the Mets since '62. I grew up listening to him tell me how good the Mets were except in '86 he was very very right about that team.

The Murph was as big part of the Mets history and persona as Seaver Gooden or Piazza. 41 years! thats simply amazing - with style and class. He will be missed.

As much as I was never a Mets fan, I always liked Bob Murphy as an announcer.

last night i didnt even watch the game, i just laid down and listened to the fan. i listened as murphy took over broadcasting duties in the 9th. and i was mesmerized just as i was each time before that. and you know what makes me have even more respect for that man? he served as a marine in ww2. by far the best announcer ever. you always knew he was rooting for the mets but he was never a homer like the cubs announcer. he always tried to stay impartial, he was always upbeat, always had hope. bob will be missed very much.

i've listened to a Met game or two on the 'fan ' and i was never familiar with the announcers names.
There was one announcer who i felt was torture to listen to, now i believe it was this Bob Murphy.
It seemed each time the other announcer made a comment or observation this guy would always immediately after repeat the same comment or observation.
other announcer: "it looks like Mike is starting to swing the bat better"
Bob M: "Mike is sure swinging the bat better"
other announcer: "that was a really close play"
Bob M: " that play was really close"
i'm assuming Bob M is the guy i'm thinking of.

It probably was, Funkman. It his latter years he sorta got a little boring. And I always listen to the FAN. I dont waste my time with TV.

Let me tell you why I love old school announcers like Bob Murphy - they don't tax your brain.
Modern announcers tend to make the broadcast all about them. I'm sick of know-it-alls like Tim McCarver. I don't give a shit about the spin on a split fingered fastball. I don't care about the sequence of pitches (fastball in, breaking ball away, slider in the dirt, change-up), and I don't want to see them replayed unless something interesting happened.
So basically I want the type of announcer that any 7 year old can relate to. Give me some play by play, some reasonable analysis, and a few interesting anecdotes.
Watching sports is about relaxing. A good announcer is the type of guy you would like to go to a ballgame with. I would not like to go to a game with Tim McCarver, Jim Kaat, or Michael Kay.
And definitely not John Sterling - he told me to go fuck myself when I was 13 years old. He was announcing for the Nets at the time. I saw him at the Garden. As I was askng for his autograph, I made a remark about how he says "bullseye" too much when the Nets score a basket. I didn't mean it in a nasty or insulting way, I just said it because I was 13 and I wanted to have something to say, something that would demonstrate that I am familiar with his style.
And the asshole tells me to go fuck myself. If I'm at the Stadium when he dies and they ask for a moment of silence, I promise you I will fuck it up.
And with that said, I hope John Sterling dies of the most excruciating cancer imaginable. Dick.

Did anyone hear what Harold Reynolds said on Sportscenter last night? He said it was a digrace that the Mets had given Murphy a framed jersey with the #42 on it because of Jakie Robinson. What a fucking tool. The 42 is for the years he put in as a Mets announcer. If they were going to put up on the wall as a retired # I can see the complaint. (42 is retired in baseball for the last few years as a tribute to Robinson. The only players who are allowed to wear it now are ones that were wearing it before baseball retired it.)

Wow, that is absurd. If they gave him a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform with a big red line through "Robinson" and the name "Murphy" on top, then perhaps it would be in poor taste.

That is the most horrifying story I've ever heard. If you need help stabbing him in the eyes, just tell me.

42 is retired in baseball
you mean by every team except the new york yankees. they are the only team that won't retire number 42. if you look at all the numbers the yankees have retired you will never find a 42, but every other baseball team retired the number. so once again: FUCK THE YANKEES!!!!

Go change your tampon, cry baby. Why the fuck shoudl ANY team retire the # of a player that never played for them? That is bullshit. But I'm sure Rivera was wearing it before this stupid "rule" came into effect and maybe the Yanks will actually observe and retire the #. I better not se that # in momument park tho. And Bob Murphy sucked. Even his calls from the 80's blew. Whiney ass voice...a swing and a miss, a swing and a miss, struckem out struckem outSHUTTHEFUCKUP!!! He was Awful!!!!!

Make sure at that moment of silence you either try to scream real loud:
"IT IS HIGH, IT IS FAR.. HE IS.. DEAD!" or
"JJJOOOOOOOOOOOAHAHAHAHAHAHAHOOON STERLING'SDEAD" in that grating "TTTTHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEESWIN" voice :)

Joe Morgan does the same thing with pitches every time he is on ESPN . The radio announcers for ESPN
aren't as annoying as he is, so I just listen to the game on radio.
