Recently at work they have been hiring a LOT of people who don't speak any english at all, most of them spanish. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people speaking other languages around me but when that is all you can speak I think that they should not be hired. When I need to communicate with my co-workers and I can't because I can't speak spanish, there is something wrong. Worst case senario it could be a danger to me. Im not thinking to that extreme though, when I say to someone "They need that pallet in stationary." I expect them to understand and not to just look at me blankly and continue to do what they do. It gets rather frustrating when I am supposed to train someone who does not understand a word I am saying.

Anyone have similar problems in their work place?

I work in the health care field where I come into contact with many Hispanics who don't speak English. It's really hard to assess someone's problem when they don't understand a word you're saying, What really gets my goat is that a couple of weeks ago, one of my so-called patients complained to my director that I couldn't help her since I couldn't understand her and my director implied that it was my fault that I don't speak Spanish. The only thing that I could say to her was "What country are we in presently?" Needless to say that didn't go over to well!!! FUCK HER!!!!!

Amy, I had the same problem here. But it was the cleaning staff. Now I know they are breaking their backs and not working for much and came to America for a better life - good for them - but when they don't know English, it is a problem.

I've had things thrown away that should not have for some reason. I posted a sign on my desk and my recycle bin - DO NOT EMPTY. That didn't work. Until I posted NO VACIE. Then it stopped. I usually work late so when I asked these nice ladies what was going on, they just smiled and had nothing to say because they didn't understand (or so they indicated - but that is another aspect).

But yea, I feel that if you want to work, a basic grasp of the English language should be required.

guess what? as the hispanic population grows in this country, at least part of that population it's going to continue speaking Spanish and therefore is most likely that at some time in the future there could be more Spanish speakers in this country than not. I actaully believe that maybe this country could become a bit more civilized if WE all learned Spanish then we'd be better off.

Plus the Spanish speaking Americans in this country decide elections. I'm pretty sure the four states with the largest overall and largest Spanish-speaking populations are the same four: California, Texas, Florida, and New York. Meaning almost half of the electoral votes in any national election can be decided by Spanish speakers. So they're way too strong for anything to ever be done about it. So learn Spanish or be left behind by "the land of equality".

Its because immigrants today have it so easy to stay illiterate in English. There are so many Spanish radio and tv stations that they can live their entire life without the need to learn English. Also, even Spanish people cant understand some Spanish people, because they use dialects as well! Im just waiting for that Star Trek universal translator to come out or something like this....

No the problem is that we dont have a national language, so they have as much right to not speak english as you have to speak english. Dont get me wrong, my sister in law is Ecuadorian; I don't have an axe to grind, but it would make things easier if we had a national language.
