Is there a time limit on just how long you have to fill a prescription? I found a prescription I was given about 6 months ago and I'd like to use it. Is it still valid? Is there a cut off time when you can no longer get it filled?

I believe that it varies according to the class of drug and state to state. Check with your doctor and have them write you a new prescription if necessary.

i'm guessing if it's 6 months old and you still want to fill t, it must be something fun. bring it in, if they question you about it, say the pains lingered and has been getting worse lately.

actually it's a fairly harmless script, but i wonder if it would still work. my doctor moved away from my health plan so i can't use her anymore.

Its not always easy to go to a doctor now a days, especially with how you have to take an entire day of work to fit into a doctors schedule, despite the fact that you make an appointment with them. That being said, Id take the script to a pharmacy and try it. Id try it at a couple of them if one refuses it. If after trying it and being refused at one, ask for the script back under the guise of bringing it back to the doctor so you can get a duplicate, otherwise they may hold onto it. Ive had older than 6 month old scrips filled myself.

And that's another one. It is bad enough that people feel compelled to say "scrip". But fludgstering that into "script"?
Listen - what is so bad about saying "prescription". Too all that long for yah? Or is it too difficult to differentiate that from "perscription", another one of those funny words.

Look Bunny, I only use the colloquial name for it because its easier to write "script" than "prescription"

does is say on the label of the bottle - next to how many refills you've got left, how long you have? For a few of my scripts, it says something like "You have 2 refills before 11/11/03" or something like that.
Then again, I get mine filled at walgreens and i think they're all different - but they might all have something like that on the label.
If not ask the pharmacist.

well if ya tell me the drug i can tell you if it's stable or not; I worked at a pharmaceutical lab before teaching.
some stuff lasts forever; some degrades, some real fast in light, and different himidities and temps.

like someone already said it depends on the class..
any of my good prescriptions are a 6 month expiration on the prescription...
try to fill it...can't hurt..most they'll say is it's too late.

I don't think that information would affect whether or not he can get the prescription filled. I highly doubt that a pharmacist is going to fil a 6 month old prescription with 6 month old pills.

He doesn't have a bottle. He has a perscription.
Just call up your doctor or pharmacy and ask. You don't need to go see your doctor again. You don't have to go and try lots of pharmacies. If it's something you've gone 6 months without, I imagine that it's not something cruicial like antibiotics or painkillers and so if you can't get it filled, you'll be able to live without it. OTOH if it's something that benign, there may not be a time limit anyhow.
I tried to google and find out how long perscriptions were good for in NY State, but I got annoyed and stopped, plus I have to go to work anyway. If you want to know about North Carolina, however, that pops up very readily.

Oh sure it's good! Why I get my prescriptions refilled all the time! Even months after I find the prescription. Of course I often force my doctor at gunpoint to make the phone call to the pharmacist and yes my doctor is a homeless man who likes crackers and when he's done with the prescriptions I keep the gun on him and make him do impressions of the cast of "Eight Is Enough" for saltines. But hey, the joke is on him, because it's not even a real gun! It's the gun you use for Duck Hunt! Muhahahaha! Remember that fucking game?!? You could blow these birds clear out of the sky!!! They weren't real though, they were on television but who's counting.
I SAID WHO'S COUNTING?!?!
WHO?!?!

I'm not talking about using old medication, but trying to fill an old prescription. I will give it a try and see if my local pharmacist can fill it. If not, than I'll contact my doctor. I use my meds sparingly so I was able to go without having to fill the script.
