Bruno taken to psychiatric hospital

Bruno had been talking about a return to the ring
Former heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno is being treated at a mental hospital after being taken from his home by medics.
Police officers helped to remove the father-of-three from his home near Brentwood, Essex, under the terms of mental health legislation, according to a police source.

Mr Bruno, 41, was then transferred into the care of a local mental health NHS trust.

The BBC's Clarence Mitchell said he understood Mr Bruno was being assessed at Goodmayes Hospital in Ilford.

Essex Police said: "We have been assisting ambulance crews to remove a patient from an address near Brentwood.

The source added: "The patient is Frank Bruno. It is my understanding that he has been sectioned."

With the money I lost, I've been a little bit depressed

Bruno dismisses drug stories
Former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan said Mr Bruno's behaviour of late had been "irrational" and he may have "buckled" under the weight of a number of recent personal issues.

"Frank's very close friend and trainer George Francis' suicide [in April 2002] had a devastating effect on him.

"His wife walking out and the fact he's retired and has no more focus has meant it all seems to be going pretty ropy," he said.

Mr McGuigan said he had not spoken to Mr Bruno recently.

"A number of people in the boxing world have rallied around and tried to help," Mr McGuigan said.

"But Frank has always lacked self-esteem and has always been a very sensitive chap."

McGuigan: "Bruno's life seems to be going pretty ropy"

BBC sports correspondent James Pearce said: "He is one of our most-loved sportsmen today and was one of the most famous sportsmen in Britain when he retired."

But he said Mr Bruno had found it very difficult to define a role for himself since leaving the boxing limelight.

Mr Bruno had reportedly been receiving treatment at the Priory clinic in Chelmsford, Essex, possibly for depression, following a divorce from his wife that reportedly cost him around œ5m.

But the former WBC heavyweight champion, who applied for the reinstatement of his boxing licence in June, maintained he was still capable of challenging for the world title.

Defending

In early August, on BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek, Mr Bruno launched an attack on the "mugs" and "creeps" he believed were trying to portray him in the same light as Mike Tyson.

"I went to the Priory because I couldn't understand how I could lose so much money through lawyers, through solicitors, through accountants and through people," Mr Bruno said.

"It is jealousy and power and money. They are trying to make me into the English Mike Tyson but I'm not the English Mike Tyson. I'm the English Frank Bruno I always was.

"Everybody has problems. I'm okay. I've been through but I'm feeling stronger and stronger every day," he said.

"I wouldn't go so far as to say I've been depressed. With the money I lost, I've been a little bit depressed."

Frank Bruno lifted the WBC crown by beating Oliver McCall on points at Wembley Stadium in September 1995.

In my opinion, there's nothing in this world beats a '52 Vincent and a red headed girl.
