I think, aside from the smoking ban, he's done an amazing job with the shit situation he inherited when he became mayor.
He has managed to balance the budget, and get Albany to help the city albeit with a fight. He's also working hard to get the municipal union to conceed productivity requirements in order to get a raise AND he got this whole new New York City marketing thing going which will make the city money.
New York was probably hardest hit by the effects of the recession and 9-11 and while I don't agree with everything he's done, I would vote for him again.
Giuliani was hated up until the 9-11 thing btw.
I honestly think he can win again.

Bloomberg is cleaning up a mess he didn't make and is taking the heat without crying about it, blaming the guy before him, pointing fingers at everybody else, etc. and, most surprisingly these days, without making it worse by trying to cover his ass. It is called being an adult. I can't blame you people for not recognizing this because it happens so infrequently in our political system.
And he's worth $4.9 Billion according to Forbes.

I agree, it's not a popular or pretty opinion but it is the truth.
The archives are open to ALL now so I suggest anyone to listen to a few shows prior to 9-11.....you would have thought Giuliani was openly practicing black magic and the "O & A" crew were an angry mob from Salem. He was public enemy # 1.

City Business Info (http://www.newsday.com/mynews/ny-vpbow193460947sep19,0,7966480.story)
In both 1950 and 1960, the city's unemployment rate was significantly lower than the U.S rate, but in 28 of the last 32 years New York's year-end jobless rate has been higher than the national rate.
Deficit (http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/politics/ny-nylabe193461215sep19,0,6345611.story)
The mayor at the conclave delved into the grim fiscal hand he'd been dealt when he took office, noting that Rudolph Giuliani's administration cut taxes by $3 billion a year even as spending rose 80 percent.
Actual Statistics (http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/politics/ny-nyrept183459514sep18,0,6645731.story)
Obviously, expenses on services increased greatly after 9-11, so it's not like Guiliani went nuts spreading the loot. The thing is, the actual effect of those 4 firehouses closing was at most a 6 second response time in Brooklyn and none of those Firefighters were fired. They were simply incorporated into other fire houses.
The fact is, he has kept his promise of making tough decisions for the city and has not backed down because he needs the vote. I've had to pay the higher sales taxes and huge parking tickets. I have bitched and moaned every fucking time I'm standing in the street like a leper smoking a cigarette. I still think he's doing the best he can, and he's making the soundest economic decisions for this city.

A kid I grew up with was FDNY and died in Tower 1.
When I heard the city was shutting down firehouses after 9/11; I seriously thought it was a joke, or some horrific case of mis-reporting.
Didn't bush pledge $20 Billion to the cities after this?
You're right, he inherited a shitty deck of cards. But I can;t imagine, I can't even fathom; Rudolph Giuliani in front of a Dais explaining why Engine 7 Ladder 1 will be shutting down after 80 years.
No fucking way.
I was scared shitless the first time I drove into NYC after 9/11. The fact I was appearing on R+F didnt help; but it wasn't that. It was just scary as Fuck, and I remember that.
I also remember seeing the City with Police all over the place, and they were totally cool, and it felt great. I never felt so secure walking around the City.

You read the statistics one way, I read them another.
I see a mayor dealing with the effects of 9-11, a huge budget deficit and a recession still keeping shit together albeit with some losses.
The negative changes in these statistics aren't a direct result of his mismanagement or incompetance as a mayor, but of factors beyond his control.

Welcome to Science and Data Interpreataion!
It's actully Good that Stats can be used to bolster Either side [assuming only 2 sides here, most issues have many]; because in science a Good Theory must also be Falsifiable.
Let us also remember; the Job of the Mayor of the City of New York is a lot like President in terms of control. New York Cities budget is larger then the budget for other States.
So the POTUS and the Mayor only hold so much sway over the Rudders of the USA and NYC, respectively.
There are so many outside forces no one can deal with in jobs this big.
Oh and as for worst mayor, they all pale in comparison to David 'Let me Sleep Through these Riots' Dinkins.
How bad was he? Giuliani defeated him. And if you remember back then, there was a time where people were like 'MAYOR Giuliani?!?! No way... he cant beat a Liberal Minority Incumbent. No way...'
Ditto given Giuliani's brash, blunt demanor. Which personally I love.

You read the statistics one way, I read them another.
Lets take a look at some of them shall we....
Record homeless among data
There are more than 2.5 million city residents living at or teetering in poverty, and that's a third of the city residents
The number of families seeking shelter for the first time has risen 56.5 percent since fiscal year 2001 to 7,087 in fiscal year 2003.
Emergency complaints to the Department of Buildings rose by 23 percent. Yet, at the same time, construction inspections Dr0pped nearly 7 percent because of staffing shortages, the report found.
Highlights from the Mayor's Management Report:
Food-stamp recipients: Up Rose from 820,000 to 871,000.
Families in shelters: Up Number in system for the first time rose to 7,087.
Construction inspections: Down 6.8 percent decline, due to to city
job attrition and "difficulties recruiting candidates" for vacancies.
Police response: Slower Increased 12 seconds for "serious and critical" crimes in progress and by 42 seconds for "noncritical" calls.
Ambulance response: Slower Average for life-threatening medical emergencies was 6 minutes, 54 seconds - two seconds slower than previous
fiscal year.
Fire response: Slower Average for structural fires was slightly slower in Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn, by 1, 2 and 6 seconds, respectively.
Public school attendance: Up Rose slightly, from average 88.8
percent to 89.4 percent daily, highest since 1999.
Jail stabbings and slashings: Up Rose from 29 to 40, the first such
increase since 1999 - as did assaults on staff, from 400 to 462.
Infant mortality: Down City's rate at its lowest level ever, 6 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared with 6.1 year before.
So I have to ask, did you replace the word "slower" with "faster" and "increase" to "decrease", and then read it? Or did you totally focus on the infant mortality rate Dr0pping from %6.1 to %6? Or maybe that school attendence rate jumping a half point?

There are more than 2.5 million city residents living [/b]at or teetering in poverty[/b], and that's a third of the city residents
In 2000, 1,668,938 people in NYC were living below the poverty line of the 8,008,278 persons recorded in the census. That's about 21% of the city.
From the 2002 preliminary census data, the high estimates show that 1,646,329 thousand New York residents are below the poverty level out of a total of 9,167,098 total residents, or about 18%.
I think the drastic difference between the two lies in the "at or teetering."
The number of families seeking shelter for the first time has risen 56.5 percent since fiscal year 2001 to 7,087 in fiscal year 2003.
Out of a city of 9,167,098, an increase in about 8000 seeking shelter, considering the effects beyond the city's control on the economy and the drained resources are not staggering.
Emergency complaints to the Department of Buildings rose by 23 percent. Yet, at the same time, construction inspections Dr0pped nearly 7 percent because of staffing shortages, the report found.
The implementation of the 311 system has seen an increase overall of calls to all city agencies due to the amazing success and accesibility of getting information as oppossed to the past. I work for contractors and architects that pay me to understand how the Dept of Buildings works, and I have to say, that if licensed individuals avoid it, imagine how the regular homeowner felt having to go in person to the DOB before 311 was implemented to lodge a complaint. This is seriously just a statistical increase due to a better system employed to receive complaints.
Police response: Slower Increased 12 seconds for "serious and critical" crimes in progress and by 42 seconds for "noncritical" calls.
Ambulance response: Slower Average for life-threatening medical emergencies was 6 minutes, 54 seconds - two seconds slower than previous fiscal year.
Fire response: Slower Average for structural fires was slightly slower in Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn, by 1, 2 and 6 seconds, respectively.

I read the information, did some research, and came to the conclusion, as I stated before, that given the circumstances, I don't feel he has had a negative effect on New York City as a mayor. I think he's done a great job of dealing with shit.

Wow Wadd when yer right yer Right. I completely forgot about this thread.
Anyone else ever read a thread, get into it, and then realize its an old post, and you even responded, but for some reason, it's gone from my brain.
And a great time to bring up the state of NYC; I believe the Rep Convention is in Manhattan yes?? Not 100% on that but...
Anyway; Bloomberg is still a mix for me; NYC seems to be doing OK, but since I live about 50 miles from it, I defer to those closer.
It's tough, if you're not 40 like me, to know the Manhattan of the 70s and 80s, irrespective of Mayor. It scared this 6 foot 6-er; I never felt at ease when I was there, and I had reason to go in a lot. If I drove in the approach to the holland was people bugging the fuck out of you selling shit, and coming out, the squeegee army. Times Square and 42nd St? It was a different Universe then it is now; Porn Shops, Hock Shops, Porn Movies, Martial Arts Movies. I miss it now, terribly, but back then for this guy it was a dangeous place. Saw a lot of shit happen; and happen to friends. I was lucky I guess.
So what the fuck does that have to do with anything? Well; I dunno, but Giuliani made NY City a place I could enjoy. And someone mentioned he was hated pre-9/11. Well, early on, after winning a squeaker of an election [i think?]; he set forth to clean up the city, and pissed off a lot of people, went where mayors hadnt before, and often did come off as a smarmy fuck. His prosecutorial experience [he was a umm.. shit Federal Prosecutor? thats wrong] meant when someone pissed him off, he went after them hard, including his agenda. So I don't know what to say, because he was dealt the worst hand in the world on Sept.11, and, whether by chance or will or both, it was handled in a way such that I actually was like, 'Thank fucking Christ this guy is there right now. We need an ass kicker with a pair, and someone who didn;t fold, and he didn't, and he did a lot of crappy stuff I disagree with too.
Bloomberg?
Still too soon for me. Sept. 11 still rings loud to me. The echo in my brain. It's tough to look at the skyline. Meaning I have NO Idea how He's doing; that he would close a firehouse after that to me = No F-ing Way, my friend. Buy the fucker if you have to; those $$ helped get you elected.
But that same $$ means it seems he's not being bought, and like what he does or not, and there's much on both I feel towards him, the guy has his agenda, will try to get it going, and if the peeps don't like it, they will elect someone else.
Wow I'm a wordy toad.
furie
01-19-2004, 06:30 AM
Bloomberg kicking in his own money would not have solved the problem. NYC has been overspending for years, and the city needed to be taken back to the path of fiscal solvency. And we're on that path now.
9-11 happened before he got in, and he was forced to deal not only with a city steeped in debt, but that now was losing thousands of high paying jobs and tax revenue to outlying areas.
The man had to make some unpopular decisions. The right ones usually are.
