How do hot dog vendors pick their spot?

I assume they need a license to sell their wares on the street, are they also assigned a certain block or corner? Is it on a first come, first served basis? If so, do they ever get in fights with each other over heavily trafficked areas? If yes, has anyone ever seen it and would you please describe it in full detail. Anyone know?

Years ago, I was outside Roseland or one of those clubs in NY waiting in line for a show (KMFDM, I think) and a hot dogs guy was working the line. A second guy came around the first guy started fighting with second, saying was his spot and shit. It almost came to fistacuffs, but I think the police presence dissuaded them.

I don't know how it is in the city, but I know on parts of Long Island people who are hot dog vendors or drive ice cream trucks get/buy routes.

I've seen vendors in the city fight over selling hotdogs too, so I don't think they have specific areas. But I believe they must be licensed.
