Oh joy. Let me guess, they'll blame this on some supposed "curse" that Babe Ruth put on the Red Sox for sending him to a team where he became the franchise player and made more money. They WON'T mention that in subseqent years management made lousy deals, neglected to bring in black or Latin players, and were beholden to the theory that right-handed power hitters, NOT pitchers (especially lefties), were the key to winning in Fenway.

what i never understood about the righties and Fenway is: Wouldn't right-hander power hitters be bad because they would constantly hit the ball into the monstah?

from the LA Times:
In the HBO documentary "Curse of the Bambino," Boston comedian Lenny Clarke recalls what he did when Bill Buckner's error at first base in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series denied the Red Sox once again.

Do we really need to relive Buckner blowing it again? Jesus Christ this guy is going to turn into the kicker from Ace Ventura.

Won't it make it so much more sweeter to win one title over the span of many many years as opposed to winning one every year almost? I would hate to get spoiled being the fan of a winning team after awhile. Then again, I have never had the chance to get spoiled cause I have never been a fan of a winning team.

Yea, that's it. I'm sure every fan in Boston would just HATE to see their team win every year. And believe me, its just awful to watch your team dominate, I loathe it so much.

No, actually it is beneficial to hit it into the monster because every ball off of the monster is usually a double. With the wall further in than most parks, there are a lot of doubles hit by the Sox. If you look at home batting average, the Sox are hitting WAY better than any other team. However, on the road, they hit much worse, albeit still pretty good.

Racist in Boston? Where would you get an idea like that?
You know why they scream Nomar all the time? Because they don't have the mental capabilities to scream Garciapara.

OK, this is coming from a Yankee fan:
Bill Buckner did not cost the Red Sox the '86 Series. The score was tied - tied. What about the wild pitch that tied it? Why does everyone forget that? Why doesn't the Boston pitcher get the blame for blowing that World Series?
It's fun when your team wins a championship, but there's also a downside. Ticket prices go up and the stadium gets crowded. I go to about 35 Yankee games each season. I liked it better when the place was empty.
In fact, I wish I could have gone to the make-up afternoon game vs. Toronto a week ago Monday, when they had only 8,000 in the house.

I legitimately dislike when my team wins. I am no longer a DEvil fan because of it. I think i might just be a headcase but i had a big dillemma when the Ravens actually won the Super Bowl because i had become a fan because I never thought they would win. I hate winners. And weiners.

Thank you. Calvin Schiraldi made the wild pitch and manager John McNamara should have replaced Buckner at first with Dave Stapleton.

It's amazing how many people get this wrong. I used to live with a bunch of Sox fans, and I got in a big argument with them one day about this. All three of them swore to me that the Sox had the lead until the ball went through Buckner's legs. I had to show it to them on tape before they believed me.

Well, I watched the rebroadcast this morning and I have to admit it was pretty well done.
They WON'T mention that in subseqent years management made lousy deals, neglected to bring in black or Latin players, and were beholden to the theory that right-handed power hitters, NOT pitchers (especially lefties), were the key to winning in Fenway.
Hmmm -- they did after all. Maybe it will sink in after all that Ruth did NOT curse the team. I forgot who it was that made the excellent point that The Sox never bunt or steal bases.
Not only does Boston suck, but they're a bunch of racists too.
I never understood why Tom Yawkey never saw the example of the Celts. Bill Russell, K.C. Jones, Satch Sanders and JoJo White were the core of a dynasty.
Calvin Schiraldi made the wild pitch
Oh yeah, it was Bob Stanley. How could I forget?
The one complaint I had was the pitch-by-pitch breakdown (so to speak) of the 10th inning of Game 6 of the '86 World Series. It still hurts to watch. All those bad feelings still linger.
Now let's see how long it takes Aggie to torture me once more with the Mookie/Buckner pic...

I've been reading Moneyball. Its about how the A's are able to field such consistantly good teams even though they have no money.
The major reason is because they look ot statistics in a completely different way than any other major league team. (Actually it hints that Theo Epstein is beginning to understand this, and that he has been given the authority of the owner to begin to implement it)
Basically On-Base percentage is the most desireable statistic for a hitter. The ability to get on base without making an out is the single most determining factor in scoring runs.
Things like bunting and stealing are actually detrimental to their chance of scoring because of the high chance of resulting in an out.
They have actually made equations or algorythims(sp?) to determine the potential for a run in every possible situation on the field, and with an out, the numbers Dr0p dramatically.
So you should be more thankful that the Sox are doing what they can to avoid senseless outs.

By the way, how is it possible that HBO always makes such incredible sports documentaries? I have never seen one that wasn't great.
Also, which is worse? Being a diehard fan of:
A really good team that always finds a way to lose (Sox)
Or
A team that has an owner who refuses to pay for personnel, complains that he is losing money, and then forces the team to field a far inferior product that hasnt won in over 10 years, yet continually jacks up the prices (Pirates)
