View Full Version : Lightbulb Phenomenon?

6 years ago Lisa bought me a bunch of blacklight/strobe light/disco light shit to give my room the Ultimate Potheads Dream. Well, one item was a simple red light bulb. I didn't use it at the time but 2 years later I moved into the house I live in now. So I had a useless light fixture in my kitchen and decided to put the red light bulb in. It makes the room a nice soft red so you can see as you stumble into the bathroom at 3am. Now, I have never turned the light off since the first time I turned it on. 4 years later the bulb is still keeping me from stubbing a toe on my way to the bathroom. For 4 years this light bulb has been on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Is this abnormal? I recall having to change regular 60-watt light bulbs all the time in other lamps/fixtures. Should I not touch it? Can I get into Guinness?

sounds like a really long time for a bulb to last...

Roaxanne, you don't have to put on the redlight!

Yeah, I'd say technology is at a level where bulbs generally last longer than they used to. I also always heard that turning ANY electrical item on and off shortens its life, and that those left on constantly last longer. Touch it? Why? If it aint broke, dont fix it, but definitely have a replacement on hand for when it does blow. Having had it that long will make it suck to have to adjust to a regular light. And I think there's plenty of other categories you could consider for getting into Guinness, Robert.

I bet it has something to do with the fact that is was always ON for years, only going off in power outages. Remember, a bulb usually blows as you turn it on. I bet keeping the current running through it at a steady stream just keeps it like an open circuit.

The filament lasts longer if you leave it on as it's not subject to the temperature changes of a lightbulb used under normal conditions. Heating up the filament and then cooling it off weakens it where it eventually gets to the point that it breaks.

Nice!

Yeah I was reading down and remembered the Firehouse one, I had an article on that I'd show my students.

Science-nerds no doubt know of T.A. Edison's filament experiments; fantastic stuff.

What's cool about it is this; A light bulb filament is just a piece of metal in the circuit with a lot of electrical resistance; it blocks those flowin' electrons so much so that it all builds up until the atoms are so excited they emit light. Well heat actually, since a light bulb generates far more energy in the InfraRed range then in Visible.

Just like the glowing things in your toaster.

Cool stuff. Check out 'The Pencil' by Henry Petrowski. 400 pages on the evolution of the pencil. Boring? Became a surprise best-seller...

...hey! stop Yawning!!!

You know the Firehouse story, too? I finally found the love of a lifetime. But baby, don't treat me bad. This could be the best thing that you'll ever have.

I think it's pretty amazing about that firehouse light. They even have a webcam on this damn bulb!

I have the same thing with my car. It has been running straight for 4 years, I leave it on all the time, even when I get gas, and also every night, but always have to remember to keep the garage door open. It is still running - no problem.
