NEW YORK - Johnny Cash (news), a towering figure in American music spanning country, rock and folk and known worldwide as "The Man in Black," has died, according to hospital officials in Nashville, Tenn. He was 71.

"Johnny died due to complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure," said Cash's manager, Lou Robin, in a press release issued by Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

The release said Cash died at the hospital at 1 a.m. EDT. He was released from Baptist on Wednesday where he had spent two weeks being treated for an unspecified stomach ailment.

"I hope that friends and fans of Johnny will pray for the Cash family to find comfort during this very difficult time," Robin said. Yahoo! News (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=494&ncid=494&e=1&u=/ap/20030912/ap_en_tv/obit_cash)

Nooo! Another great in entertainment... you will be missed, Johnny!

He will be missed. I meant to buy his new record and now I have to be cheezy and buy it with everyone else. We lost a major talent. Heaven is getting filled up with all the cool people.

Absolutely heartbreaking. There are very few figures in history who changed the face of music the way Johnny did. He was and icon and a personal inspiration to me in many ways.

This one really hurts.

Wow...two John's in the entertainment buisness pass away in the same night...only hours from each other...what were the odds. Johnny Cashs' music is timeless and will be always remembered as he will be. Remember his wife passed away only about 1-2 months ago.
He will be missed.
We are losing so many people in the entertainment field we are going to start relying on American Idol runners up. (QUICK...GET MY GUN!!!)

My buddy who is a teacher is a big Cash fan. He said he's starting all his classes today with "Sunday Morning Coming Down" in tribute to the Man In Black.

Geez, there's like three of these threads already, but I'll stick in the one made by the mod...

Cash was absolutely amazing. Besides the great music, he was able to remain popular(and good) for over 50 years. My dad made the remark that soon after June died Johnny wouldn't be too long in going, and he was right.

I guess the best thing about Johnny I can say that hasn't already been said is that there NEVER will be another like him, at least in country music...

For those in the DC area, a bunch of local bands are doing a Sun Records Tribute party this Saturday night at the Half Moon BBQ in Silver Spring, MD. You can bet that you're gonna hear lots of Johnny Cash tunes that night. My band is doing "Cocaine Blues", "Big River", and maybe "Folsom Prison Blues". More info at www.westernbop.com.

What a talent and he will be sorely missed. Yeah, heaven is getting filled up with all the cool people and what a rocking good time they are all having now. He now gets to be reunited with his wife who also passed away earlier this year. I'll be listening today in tribute.

I fly a starship across the Universe divide.
And when I reach the other side,
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can.
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again.
Or I may simply be a single Dr0p of rain,
But I will remain...
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..
-- Johnny Cash -- from "Highwayman"

Great words sang by a great American. RIP Johnny.

johnny cash was one of my last idols... there are 2 out there left.

and whomever said "toughguys show no emotions" should see me right now.

and in honor of of the man in black... i did my shot of tennesse's finest whiskey...

REST IN PEACE BRETHREN

and i hope those heartless bastards at mtv for not honoring you feel like complete shit.

but i also do feel, the man in black did die of a broken heart. June Carter Cash was his life's blood. thats what kept him alive...

everyone should do a toast to him of tennesse's finest whiskey and do a shot for him. he is one of the major influences to every band out there today

No matter how old he was, it was always going to seem like too soon.

His daughter said that after June died he really threw himself into his music and was doing up to three songs a day when he wasn't sick. You just KNOW that last album is going to be monstrously beautiful.

VH1 was replaying their "Johnny Cash: Legends" special and the episode of "Storytellers" with him and Willie Nelson last night...don't know if that'll still be running today, but their schedule didn't reflect it last night, so maybe...

I just have not spent enough time listening to the recent songs as I should have. I have heard stuff here and there but never bought any of it. I guess now is as good of a time as any to listen to it as it has been on all day. I just JUST saw the video for Hurt and it just brought me to tears. The only Cash I had ever really owned was the Prison records, early records and the various Greatest Hits albums. The various cover songs have been filling the CD/record player today as well.

Not to sound naive or anything but I had always known that Cash was the MAN but it is really dawning on me just how incredibly powerful he was.

These old performances on the TV are really really excellent.

Around here we get GAC, and those douchebags have decided to play absolutely ZERO Cash. Thats right....ZERO. Nothing the day he died, nothing all weekend.

An icon in the goddamn industry dies, and you put NOTHING on your channel???

Damn you to hell...
