View Full Version : John Ritter dies at the age of 54...

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 12) - Actor John Ritter, who gained fame playing bumbling and lovable characters in a pair of television comedies decades apart, has died, a representative said on Friday.

Details of the circumstances of his death were not immediately available.

Ritter was best known for his portrayal of Jack in the 1970s situation comedy "Three's Company" and recently he starred in the series "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," a centerpiece of broadcaster ABC's upcoming fall schedule.

John Ritter was the son of country singer and actor Tex Ritter.

Wow...I know this year seems to be the year thatso many celebriaties are dying, but I would have NEVER saw this one comming. Not many people remember but John Ritter also starred in a movie called Stay Tuned, which he played a couch potato who gets sucked into a television by way of Hell. He played many charachters incuding a cartoon mouse sequence drawn by Chuck Jones himself and also a quick clip making fun of himself when he was in Three's Company. Also starred in the Blake Edwards flick Skin Deep (Also very funny), along with Real Men also starring James Belushi amoung others.
So long Jack Tripper...you made us laugh at least one time or another. You definately left way too soon.
Rest In Peace

Very sad, one of my favorite comedians of all-time. And it was on 9/11 too? Right.

Great man, he will be missed. R.I.P.

PS: I wonder what 8 Simple Rules will do now. Tribute show?

FUCK!

Now who's gonna play the lead role in the movie of my life story. First Sam Kinison dies, then John Candy, and now John Ritter!

My little brother used to bust me that I looked just like John Ritter (ok...a really fat version of him) and that I was a ham & overreacted in front of women just like his famous character, Jack Tripper. And I also loved to cook, so my bro & I used to bust that some day I would own a restaurant & name it "Jack's Bistro." So I've always had a special place in my heart for John Ritter.

This news severely sucks...even though he was of little use to most of us these days (I doubt that many of the people here watched "8 Simple Rules"), he was one of my favorite people to watch do anything. And even though many of his movies were fairly cheesey (a fact I'm sure he would admit), I would always stop on a channel if I saw his face.

You made me laugh...now you've made me cry just a little...and as one of the biggest comedic actors in the world (for a brief moment), you lived a life many of us can only dream of. Rest in peace, friend, you will be sadly missed!

Damn fuckin' shame, I wonder who's going to take his spot in ABC's 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. Even though I never watched any of his sitcoms & movies... 54 is a young age to die, esp. when you're rich.

In a statement, Kasteler said Ritter was rushed to the hospital after suffering from an unrecognized and undetected flaw in his aorta.

Wow...I know this year seems to be the year thatso many celebriaties are dying, but I would have NEVER saw this one comming

I am so Bummed; just waxing about The Man In Black, and then I see this...

Not to be morbid, but I saw a news piece that said it was a congenital atrial defect.

In my opinion, If there's a 'good' way to die, this is it. The pipe goes, you faint, no pain, no warning, no chemo, no long goodbyes...

This is usually the reason when you read those Horrific stories of a kid collapsing and dying at a soccer game. There isn't a worse thing imaginable, but for the kid, there was no pain.

I LOVED Ritter. Did you know '3s Company' was based on a British Show called 'Man About The House'? At least that what my brain remembers now.

For me, Ritter was a Fantastic Physical Comedian.

Watch 'Liar Liar' and Jim Carrey; the scene with the pen, or kicking his own ass. John Ritter was doing that kind of stuff Way Back.

He was on Broadway last year, remember, NY-ers? What was that play? There were a bunch, it was an ensemble cast...

I'm not big on some Celebs, but I would have loved to shake that mans hand...

Excelsior, John Ritter

Holy Shit as well.

After I join you for a beer at the Beagle AJ which oine of us is going to take a fall down the stairs.

I watch Three's Company every night before I go to bed and now this is going to make it all that much worse. Yes the show was bad, VERY bad at times but it got to the point where it was funny too. The Roper episodes were definitely the best.

Like many of you, I grew up with this guy. I guess though as we grow up all of our childhood heroes will begin to pass. This really sucks.

I never saw 8 Simple Rules but heard it was good. I saw the preview for it the other night and it will be interesting to see how they play this out since he was the main character pretty much.

Johnny Cash got me a tad bit choked up and was a bit expected but this is fucking tragic. Who would have known.

I work for MTV Networks, which owns Nickelodeon. John Ritter would come to the Nickelodeon Upfront parties every year to promote Three's Company on Nick At Nite. Although I never met him personally myself, there are many people here with pictures with him. They all say he was very friendly and funny and even remembered some of their names from years before. They are all saddened, as am I. Three's Company was a must see for me growing up and I still enjoy it today on reruns. He will be missed.

Anyway, Rest in Peace John Ritter. I grew up on reruns of shows like "Three's Company" and he was a highly recognizable star in whatever he was in.

He was a fairly clean, non-threatening comedian and although we all love edgy humor, you have to give the guy some respect for making it with that kind of act. IF he did anything more risque then 3's company then I'm not aware of it.

John Ritter was a good man. A family man. He wasn't just a comedian/actor. He did a lot of fund-raising and charity work as well. And he played an active role in the fight against (i believe) MS.

At the same time, I'm not downplaying the death of Johnny Cash, but c'mon... "shmagic"?

Yup, that's me.

Lord of the assholes over the death of John Ritter. Sounds about right, AND it makes perfect sense, too!

Like I said, it's messed up he died young and he was a funny guy. All that personal life stuff...hey, grand. It's always awful when someone buys it that "ahead of schedule". But in the grand scheme of things...Johnny Cash vs. John Ritter? Based on the response of the board, you'd think the latter was somehow the titan of pop culture the former actually is. I simply find that odd.

Cash's thread still hasn't broken the first page! Old or not, this is ridiculous...

Perhaps, but for me, it's simply the relevance given Cultural Context of each.

What were the big parts of Growing Up for you?

For some it was Johnny Cash.

For others it was Three's Company.

Totally different media? Of course, but the fact remains that Music, Movies, and TV are a big part of a lot of people's 'growing up', and by the looks of things, more here were watching Three's Company then listening to Cash.

No biggie. I would hope the 50-something Beatles fan would understand that I didn't grow up with them, and if they did; if they saw them live, or saw them on Ed Sullivan on those amazing nights, I can understand and appreciate the Enormous influence of The Beatles.

Having said that, I can't remember the last Beatles CD I bought.

It's a 'you hadda be there' thing.

Beatles? fantastic. Those Ed Sullivan broadcasts literally changed music overnight. But I didn't see it. I saw it years later, and totally understand how new, how different, they were at that moment.

But my first concert was KISS.

Sorry. Yeah, I know, one doesn't even come close to the other, one has talent blah blah blah...

...try explaining to the 14 year old seing KISS as the very first concert the kid ever saw. And you might see a person who, in terms of cultural context, end up thinking kISS was the shit back in the day.

Which they were.

Trivia: Ahhh... you'll all look it up anyway, but I used The Beatles, Kiss, and Johnny Cash on purpose.

Mojo this is'nt a popularity contest on which person was more important who died...Johnny Cash was as important to his craft as John ritter was to TV....comparing them is like comparing Apples to Oranges. It simply cannot be done. Chicken Hawk was right....the only reason why it John Ritter SEEMS (I said SEEMS) more like a tragedy is because The Man IN Black was in the twilight of his life...his wife, June Carter Cash passed away and he was ready to go....his life was complete.
John Ritter however, even at 54, was just starting his. He was marreid for only 5 (?) years and has a little girl younger then that. He had more to look foward to in life, and Cash has already passed that point. John Ritter was VERY young to die so suddenly like that.
It is a terrible tragedy to lose EITHER of them, but Cash was more of a Happy Passing for some, not wanting him to go but wanting him to be at peace. Ritter was at peace...and it was taken suddenly.
For me, I was pleased to know Johnny Cash thru his music and John Ritter thru his acting.
To me they both deserve the same service, without them the wrold would have been a truely darker place.
I do not know what to tell you....it is not meant to be an insult to Cash that Ritters responses are more in volume. it just seems John ritter may have touch more people in here then Cash did. Not everyone likes country (I do and appreciated his music) But more people like to laugh and that is how Ritter reached more people.
But I digress....and I am shuttig up now. (For once)
Sorry Mojo....

ABC to Continue Ritter Sitcom Without Him

LOS ANGELES - ABC's "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" will continue despite star John Ritter (news)'s death and will show the TV family coping with his character's loss, the network said Tuesday.

"Everybody recognizes that John loved that show. ... He'd have wanted the show to continue," Lloyd Braun, chairman of ABC Entertainment Television Group, told a telephone news conference.

Braun and ABC Entertainment President Susan Lyne said the sitcom will debut next Tuesday as planned and that the network will air the three episodes Ritter filmed before his death last week.

After that, the series co-starring Katey Sagal (news) will go into repeats while writers retool it and production starts. No date was given for when the show will return to the air.

It hasn't been decided if the death of Ritter's character, Paul Hennessy, will mirror what happened to the actor, ABC executives said. Yahoo! News (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=529&ncid=529&e=1&u=/ap/20030916/ap_en_tv/tv_ritter_show)

I'm watching it. It's bittersweet. John Ritter was one of those actors you didn't pay much attention to, but it saddens you to hear they died. Especially so young.

Ritter was in one of my favorite little seen 1970s horror movies, THE OTHER. Wonderful, creepy movie about nasty twins killing people on the farm. Excellent twist too.

I thought the special was a little too maudalin - wish they would leave the tv show alone and not continue.

ROYAL FAMILY and CHICO AND THE MAN prove that it can't be done when a lead dies and they try to continue on.

I think Suzanne Somers is reveling in all the attention. Let's face it, when you heard John Ritter died, how many seconds did it take you to think of Suzanne Somers?

In a strange way this seems like a career move for Suzanne. Don't be shocked and stunned if she turns up on 8 Simple Rules. Perhaps she can reunite with Joyce DeWitt for a "very special" 8 Simple Rules. Think of the ratings.

With all of that said, it seems that John Ritter was an admirable man - a sincere, warm and humble human being. And funny as hell. I think he lived a wonderful life.

I totally forgot that John Ritter was in Slingblade and was on the other side of the "not funny haha, funny queer" line. He was truly an icon to me. I guess when I was younger I watched syndicated reruns of Three's Company and ever since he's just always stood out as one of the funniest sitcom actors i've ever seen. For him to die so early is such a tragedy and i guess if the producers of "8 Simple Rules" really think he would've wanted the show to continue than it shall. I still think its a mistake though for them to continue on with the show because like NewsRadio it will just become the show that was cancelled ultimately due to someone's death.

Your theory does not hold water. I know for a fact that some people are thinking of Suzanne Somers regardless. Lest anyone think otherwise, John Ritter was no rapist. That was a totally farcical call.

I heard on Access Hollywood that there will be a tribute to Ritter at the Emmys on Sunday, and, that Joyce Dewitt and Suzanne Somers may reunite to be a part of it. They also said that his family will be there. I'm definitely going to watch that.

Zevon, Cash and Ritter do not make a true trifecta.

The first 2 were musicians, John Ritter was an actor....someone mentioned to me tonite someone from Hogan's Heroes died(?)

So, my money's on John Oates or Gordon Jump

How creepy.
