Do you think the Rap wars are real, or staged for our benefit so they can sell more records?

As of now, I think the Nas vs. Jay-Z war is real.
Doesn't seem like they like each other much.

They are EXACTLY like wrestlers in a way that they take their "characters" and "story lines" WAY to seriously. Whether it was "Ozzy" in the 80's or "2 Pac" in the 90's they are all just selling you a ridiculous image that is apparently appealing to the masses.

What the fuck is a "rap war"?
There have MC battles for 30 years now. The only time it turned real was with the whole Biggie vs. 2Pac thing. Otherwise, it's just a battle of words and IMHO brings out the best in even the weakest lyricist.

commercial rappers need no skill, just a street persona. the funny thing is, these rappers will never meet face to face and rhyme, much less fist fight. it's 99% talk. reminds me of the boondocks cartoon where huey is watching a tv report claiming the fbi will be investigating every murder mentioned on a rap cd.

The battles are pretty weak these days. Chalk it up to the fact most of the big MTV-rappers rarely tour or perform live ANYWHERE. Lame lyrics, canned beats...rap is a dire, dire thing.
Stick with the hip-hop.

What she said.
50 Cent was hit because of his shadier "hobbies", BEFORE he was a big rap name.
Jam Master Jay's tragic death was, based on all available evidence, just a robbery gone wrong, and really had nothing to do with "rap rivalries" or "wars", especially given that Jay was never involved in anything like that and was loved and respected by the hip-hop community...which makes his death all the more senseless and awful.
Of course, then you have rappers jumping producers, or producers on producers. Puffy smacked around Steve Stoute with a champagne bottle because he hadn't removed a scene in Nas' video for "Hate Me Now" where Puffy bizarrely depicts himself as being crucified. Jay-Z stabbed Lance "Un" Rivera for supposedly selling bootleg copies of his new album at the time. Of course, these aren't examples of "rap battles", just idiots doing idiotic things.
On a larger scale, the "east vs. west" thing was mostly created and pushed by the media to the point that people only remotely involved took it WAY too seriously.

Today at school, there was a new rule made:
NO FREESTYLING CIRCLES.
The reason was cause kids would make up raps about who they hate in our school, and it promoted hatred...I think its a dumb rule, if kids hate each other I guess it would be better just to talk, than rather beat the kid up.

Did you then suggest that you all go back to your house and make a Porno feature together?

its not just rap, and like was said, other than the biggy tupac thing, it never meant anything. and even that was probably more because of suge knight than anyone else.
remember at the Gay Rock concert, when fred durst started calling out the creed fag and they had a war of words for a couple weeks. the creed dude i think even challenged him to box or something, and durst was like no, and it ended. they mean nothing.
cept maybe eminem and ICP, he really seemed to hate them and they are from the same region

50 Cent was hit because of his shadier "hobbies", BEFORE he was a big rap name
big name maybe, but definitely was a rapper for awhile before slim blew him up. the reason why 50 was shot goes back to 99 when he was first signed by tommy boy. his music came out then, at least when i first heard of him. he came out with 2 songs, "Nobody Likes Me" and "How to Rob". both of these songs are the reason he was shot. nobody likes me was a direct battle track to ja rule, and how to rob was song filled with hits against everyone in the industry except big, pac, nas, and jay-z.
some beefs are born on wax those stay on wax. jay and nas beef was born from and about music, thought the fact that jay-z slept with nas's baby mother didnt help. but ja and 50's beef is born from since before they were famous. same thing about the pac and big. though out of any rapper shot big l's life was the saddest. soon as he got signed he got murdered.
