GREAT news for Bloom County fans. A character from one of the greatest comic strips of all time is returning:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is resurrecting Opus the penguin from the 1980s comic strip "Bloom County" for a new series to appear in Sunday comics this November.

The Sunday-only strip, to be called "Opus," begins Nov. 23, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. It will be syndicated by The Washington Post Writers Group.

A 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winner for editorial cartooning, Breathed stopped drawing the daily "Bloom County" in 1989 when it was running in nearly 1,300 papers. He began a Sunday strip, "Outland," with many of the same characters - including the penguin's hairball-hacking sidekick, Bill the cat - but quit that in 1995.

Partly chalking it up to artistic burnout, Breathed said at the time that cartoonists "die and go to cartoon hell for working beyond that magic intersection of art and fun."

He has since written children's books and sold the rights to an Opus movie that could start filming by the end of the year.

I always LOVED Bloom Country. Now, I'm gonna have to buy a Sunday paper again. I'm not sure if I remember Outland.

Oh well. That guy's sense of humor was great.

Crap, sorry about that! I saw the subject line from the front page and said, "HEY! That looks familiar!" And assumed it was new - stupid, stupid, stupid.

I blame the hurricane cabin fever.

You have all restored my faith in american culture by not only remembering a CLASSIC but finding classic moments from it and showing it too! I am thrilled. Bloom County with Bill, Opus, Hodge Podge, Binkly, Oliver Wendel Jones, Steve Dallas, Milo and the rest. Watching them navagate the Starship Enterpoop or forming the band Death Tounge. (With their hit "U Stink but I love U")
Berkeley Breathed will make sunday comics worth reading again. Now if they would ONLY bring back Calvin and Hobbes I will be totally satisfied.

WOOOO! HOOO!

He's Back!

http://www.berkeleybreathed.com/Images/opus_blue.jpg

Loved the first strip back today! Made me laugh and feel old at the same time, which isn't always a bad thing.

"Opus Returns" (http://www.berkeleybreathed.com/opus_returns.html)

Something to make the next year worthwhile. Now if we can only get back "The Far Side."

The interview was nothing short of genius from MR. Breathed. I think he is back at the top of his game.

Some examples of his reply's to some questions:

Berkeley Breathed: Why, you ask, do I return? Complicated question. The world went and got silly again. Who would have thought. I left it boring in 1995. Somebody should have warned me that we'd have a president landing on an aircraft carrier in a zoom suit like Tom Cruise. I'm sorry. I'm not getting left on the beach after that one.

Why are you such a mystery man?

Berkeley Breathed: It's awe-inspiring how people that live boring lives can be so endlessly fascinating when they keep their mouth shut and their head down. Its more fun this way.

Berkeley Breathed: Good question. I'm in the middle of Opus episode #5 right now and I need America's help with panels #1,2,3 and 4.
I need several examples of what could be described as The Most Romantic Newlyweds in History?at the time of their nuptials, at least. Henry the Eighth and Anne Boleyn is a dandy example. Antony and Cleopatra would be superb if they hadn't simply shacked up together.
No, Liza Minelli and David Guest don't count. Throw some ideas this way. If I use anyone's suggestions, they'll get a free sleep-over with Michael Jackson at the Neverland Childrens' Slumber Time Ranch here in Santa Barbara.

Washington, D.C.: Sorry, but I have to ask. My friend Amy says it's "BRETH-ed", like in some sonnet. I always thought it was "BREETHED" single syllable, like the past tense.
Can you please clear it up?

Berkeley Breathed: Jiiiiim DA-'vis

Salt Lake City, Utah: I need a copy of "A Wish for Wings That Work" either VHS or DVD. Where can it be found?

Berkeley Breathed: Hopefully in the rubbish pail. We can do better than that and we will with an eventual Opus film.. but I'm glad you enjoyed it. I presume your family was on speed when they watched it. I would imagine it helps.

He should be a stand up comic, this guy is hysterical. I will subscribe to the local paper just for this strip.

<img src=http://home.ix.netcom.com/~camman/_uimages/Justice4All.gif>
Bowie, Md.: Berkeley, I'm so glad you're back!; I've really missed The Far Side all these years.

Berkeley Breathed: Yes, thank you, but I don't draw Far Side. I draw Calvin and Hobbes.

Oh, Happy Happy ME.

Ack! Where pics of my family or friends should be, I have framed Bloom County images and cartoons.

I used to have the one of Opus reading the newspaper while sitting on a toilet, framed and in my bathroom.
Gotta find that.

Another fave..

...thus the s/n

There's a pic of Bill on the remote control for our aux transmitter - not long ago, every once in a while the telco loop that connects it to the tx site would lose its marbles and provoke an alarm that one would then clear by pressing the button marked
