I recently bought a new computer and everything has been going great with it.

I've tried to forget about the files on my old computer but I have some really expensive programs and files that I really need.

Here's my problem:

I had a lot of crashing with my computer. After a while it got out of hand. I got it fixed a bunch of times, but it kept shitting out on me.

Now, when I try and turn the computer on I get a error message that says the computer can't start because "WindowsSystem32ConfigSystem" is missing.

I've tried booting up with the XP disc, as well as a boot disk. Nothing has worked.

If anyone has any solutions to get my computer working at all I would really appreciate it. I'd like to have a second computer, but even if I can get it working once would be great.

Thanks for any help.

Burntail, thank you so very much.

It took me a very long time to do the stuff that you linked me to, but now my other computer is up and running. All my programs are back.

I really owe you. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with in the future.

It's amazing that computers still have Horrific Operating Systems.

With the enormous size of Windows XP [i remember Win 3.1 fitting on a dozen or so floppies or somethings...20 megs tops] you should have an intuative 'point at + Do This' function.

It's amazing how few people know about ANY of the following:

1. Using Disc Cleanup at LEAST once a week; those Temp files help 'speed up' page loading, but they also clog up quick with Tons of Shit. De1ete that Crap.

2. Clearing out your internet history and cookies once in a while; if not real often. See above.

3. How to get rid of stuff that takes up HUGE amounts of space that you never use.

Example: Fonts. Those fancy fonts can take up a load of space, people rarely use more then a few, De1ete those babies.

4. Know how to install software so you dont have to install the shit youre not gonna use. The companies Want you to do the Complete install, but you usually don't need a lot of it. See Microsoft Word.

5. Doing a Defrag.

Having said all of the above, the OS should know to do this, and when, Not the Human. And computers need to be idiot proof. Be able to point at something on the screen and type Anywhere what you want done in plain english. And the Computer does it. That's what an OS should do.
