I usually make it out to Piney Orchard at least once each year for Washington Capitals training camp (really hope they eventually build something in Ballston, closer into the city).

Nothing like the start of a new season (no matter what sport) to give you false hope!

Woohoo, can't wait for hockey to start up again. Hopefully I can make some of the Bruins training camp.

Made it to Caps training camp today way out in the Wilds of Piney Orchard, Maryland - YIKES! I can't wait until they move to the new training facility to Ballston in Arlington, Virginia.

Second day of practice open to the public, there eventually turned out to be a pretty good crowd on hand to see the three squads practice and scrimage.

The big story was a fight that broke out early in the first scrimage between a couple of fringe players. It seemed harmless enough at first, until one (Mel Angelstad) began cussing at the ref.

"FUCK YOU!" he said, loud and clear for everyone, including Caps owner, Big Ted, who was sitting right in front of me, as well as about a hundred SMALL children.

Nice move, dickhead!

The same two players ended up in a second fight, this time with some serious punches being thrown. While Angelstad appeared to have gotten the better of the other guy Darcy Verot, it was Mel who left the ice with a bloody nose.

Somehow Angelstad made it onto the ice without me noticing (yeah, always watchful), and once more he and Verot mixed it up, this time with Verot landing a NASTY upper-cut with his stick into the guy's face! Once more, Angelstad leaves the ice, his face bloodied and pissed.

The back story on them goes back to last year to a grudge the two held when competing in the AHL. By now, though, the people there were over being amused, and were booing the two would-be Caps, even though it was tough to tell which player they were booing (an argument did break out in the stands about who started what! Amazing!)

Finally, the 4th and final battle erupted a short while later when Angelstad joined the ice again, and attacked Verot with HIS stick, holding it like a hatchet, he clubbed him in the shoulder, missing his face.

He was escorted off, and by the time the coach (who was sitting right behind me) went over to have some words. Later i heard him describe the whole exchange as bizarre and sureal.

Other stuff - Jagr looked good, especially on defense; Bondra looked slow; Kolzig, Halpern and Gonchar didn't make an impression; Sutherby was really hitting the boards; Grier looked good, but Zubris looked fantastic, as did Fehr; Lang's mullet rules; Peat is ALWAYS the second person on the ice; and my new favorite players are Semin and Pudlick, just because of their names.

The other highlight of the game came later on when I accidently insulted Ted Leonsis, the owner of the Caps (and one of the world's nicest billionares) with a comment I'm sure he interpreted as a fat joke - which is not what I was going to say! In fact, the man has lost a lot of weight.

Fun all around.

ANyone go to the Devil's camp?

I will be surprised if this even makes it into the Washington Post tomorrow - especially with a Redskins game.

Went to Bruins camp this morning. Really cool to see them do drills and see the guys from a real close view.
