Some interesting stuff at Dark Horizons (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news.htm) today. For those who don't want to click, the Batman info is this:
It looks like the final list for who'll don the cape has been settled on and they're all quite young although there's a good mix of recognisable names and barely known newcomers. The Hollywood Reporter indicates that in the next few days the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal ("Donnie Darko"), Christian Bale ("American Psycho"), Joshua Jackson ("Dawson's Creek"), Cillian Murphy ("28 Days Later"), Henry Cavill ("The Count of Monte Cristo") and Eion Bailey ("Center Stage") will all be tested for the Bruce Wayne/Batman role in Christopher Nolan's film which is aiming for a February 2004 production start
Some interesting choices. Of that list, I think I'll take Christian Bale.
SW3 stuff about the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan (minor spoilers, I suppose).
And a Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban trailer will be out Dec. 5th with The Last Samurai. That's also my father's birthday, so that's a nice present for him, not that he gives a shit.

Yeah, I'd pick Bale, too. He's the only decent casting in that batch of mutts, at least Batman-wise.
I've really enjoyed Nolan's films ("Insomnia" especially), and I think he could do a decent Batman film. Though I would have preferred Frank Miller/Darren Aronofsky's "Batman: Year Man" much, MUCH more.

of that list, Bale's the best choice. but i honestly cant see him as anyone other than Patrick Bateman. he fits the bill as a billionaire and a vigilante, but not as a hero. he just seem like too much of an arrogant asshole to be likable.

Likeable? Isn't Batman SUPPOSED to be a dick?
And so Bale is known for playing a rich psycho who kills people while naked and scowling...now he'll be known for playing a rich psycho who beats people half to death while wearing kinky black leather and scowling. SUCH a stretch...

to criminals, yes. just because he's dark and brooding doesnt make him not likeable. you still sympathize with batman and believe in what he's fighting for. the only thing i dont like about batman is the fact that he doesnt kill.

*WHOOSH!*
Batman doesn't kill because it would make him cross the line that the criminal that killed his parents was all too willing to cross. He believes in justice, not blind retribution.
And Batman IS a dick to everyone else. The other superheros usually fear/mistrust him (And he has no problem letting them know he thinks that they're just in his way), his own partners seem constantly creeped out by him, and everyone thinks Bruce Wayne is just a goofy playboy schmuck.
Wait...why am I dissecting the personality of a guy in tights dressed like a bat?!?! DAMMIT.
And for the record, I think Bale does so well as Bateman (See? He's already just one vowel away from playign Batman) is that in a weird way he DID make him likeable while also presenting him as loathsome and scummy...if people didn't at least like him in SOME regard, why would there be such a rabid fanbase towards his performance in that film?
And Clerk, brilliant call with the Oingo Boingo...Elfman in tha hiz-ouse!

what makes you think you 'get it'? ending the lives of murderers would not make him a murderer. it would make him a killer. justice and retribution are not mutually exclusive.
but we all know the reason he doesnt kill is that it would be a creative strain on the writers to constantly come up with new foes. but to say he'd be 'crossing the line' is comic bullshit.
bale's very entertaining as a dick. that doesnt mean i'd root for him the way i would batman.

phix, yes catwoman is guarenteed to suck. There's rumor of a Pfeiffer cameo, but she has said she'd never wear the costume again. It was too uncomfortable.
Schmeg, you don't get it. In the early issues, Batman does kill. I think it's issue 10 where he kills Hugo Strange (if I'm wrong, fuck you, I don't feel like looking it up :) ). But Batman lives up to his own set of ideals. To him, only criminals commit murder. He could have killed the Joker a good number of times, but he has always chosen not to because he knew that he would be no better than the Joker if he did. (See the Joker/Batman dichotomy elsewhere)

you dont seem to get that killing does not equate murder. batman ending joker's life would make batman a killer, not a murderer. the line would still not be crossed.
i dont know who hugo strange is, and i dont care. i'm not aspiring to know every one of batman's deeds for the last 70(i dont know how many and fuck YOU too) or so years.

schmega, it's not Jon and I's call, it's how the character is written. It's not our opinion of his actions, it's the CHARACTER'S opinions of his actions. It's the whole crux of why does things the way he does (All the detective stuff and training). Subtract that one ideal, and you just have the Punisher. You lose everything that makes Batman interesting.

and you're the same guy who thinks szerbiak sucks, while Square's stories are 'amazing', and make lame remarks about a dead man. what does any of that have to do with this discussion?
mojo, you're right, batman WOULD turn into the punisher. but what good is the oath he made to his dead parents when he lets psychopaths live only to murder again? i think its great that batman's foes die in the movies, but i guess movies dont need to sustain an audience on a monthly basis.

Just for the record, Final Fantasy 7 and 8 were cool, but WAY too long. So overall, they did suck.
I never played 9 or 10 so I have no opinion. But if they followed suit, they suck too.
And I always HATED how they'd show you the cinema scenes on the commercials, and then the regular game sucked big floppy donkey dick.

To Upd@te the Batman casting, it looks as though Cillian Murphy from 28 Days Later is leading the way. He was good in that, but I don't know if he'll wear the Bat-suit well. Unfortunately, Bale, who really seems perfect for the role, is hesitant about it because he's worried it'll affect is future chances of playing James Bond. This is all hearsay, of course.

but what good is the oath he made to his dead parents when he lets psychopaths live only to murder again?
Because he didn't pledge to kill anyone. As the best Bat stories have shown, like "Dark Knight Returns", he has "his ways" of making sure criminals are "scared straight". And if they aren't, then he'll just keep fighting them, if that's what he has to do. THAT'S what he's pledged to do...fight until he can fight no more, and not cross that line. To him a murder is a murder, and he doesn't want to sink to that level. It keeps him a hero. The Punisher may only kill "bad guys", but he's clearly a psychotic serial killer.

It's unofficially official.
From AICN:
Harry here... Moments ago it was decided and sealed.... Christian Bale will be BATMAN in Christopher Nolan's BATMAN. I also have it confirmed that Ras Al Ghul will definitely be a villain in the film, though there may be a possibility of a small part to be played by the Scarecrow. Also the film will have a good deal to do with London this time out. But fanboys and girls... you got your wish. BALE is BATMAN! Now Celebrate!

Christopher Nolan Directing,
and Ras Al Ghul as the villian?
This Batman may not suck afterall. I hope they don't screw it up, all the pieces are in place.
I think Christian Bale is a good choice (Not as good as going with an unknown) well at least with the list of people I've heard thrown around. He is good in American Physco and Equilibrium. Good luck Patrick Bateman!!!

I was just going to post about the new Batman. But is it Ra's Al Guhl and not the Scarecrow? I'm opping for Ra's because out of all of Batman's enemies, intellectually he's in Batman's league.

Bale as Batman is fantastic; his work in Equilibrium alone makes me believe that he can do action.
I'm a little intrigued about he choice of Ghul as the villain. It seems like they should spend a film or two building up to a confrontation between the two rather than just throwing them together in the first film, but who am I to complain? We're going to get a Batman film that has a good probability of not sucking.
