I don't wear ties all that often because I don't know how to do it. Generally I have to have someone do it for me, but I would like to know how to do it someday. Is there a trick or method to tying a tie?

tough to explain in writing but here goes. the way i tie it is sufficient but there's another way which i haven't mastered which is supposed to be "thee" way to tie it...

> lift collar and hang tie around neck
> pull tie so there is more length at the wider end of the tie. let's say approx 3ft feet on the wide end and 8 inches to a foot of length on the narrow end
> swing the wide end around the narrow end 2 x's
the 1st swing make it wrap around snug but not tight. the second swing around leave a little loose
> after you swing the wide part around the narrow part the second time bring the wide end from underneath and up and over the first wrap and slip it between the first 'snug' wrap and the second loose wrap and pull it down towards your waist until it tightens the knot or the wraparounds tight
> then while holing the 'underneath' narrow end you will be able to slide the know towards your neck or throat til comfortable

sometimes when you are done the length of the wide part is either too long or short. if so, just untie and leave more length where you need it, before making the tie again...

or wear already made bow ties....

1. Unhook clip.
2. Place clip on the inside of buttoned collar.
3. Close clip.
4. Make sure collar covers "corners" of tie.

Voila!

I can do the four-in-hand if I remember, but that's the crappy tie, the real one is the winsor or somthing, but it's hard. I usually have someone else do it for me.

I wanna learn how to tie bow ties, but that's stealing from Reefs post. Someday I'll make up my own post on how to tie the bowties.

With all my interviews, I've become a master of the four-in-hand knot.

this is the reason i love business casual offices. a few years ago i had to wear a suit everyday and i had to wake my mom up to tie it for me. if i try long enough i can get it to tie, but its either to short or long, or the top part is way to big or small. i looked stupid. but now with the casual dress code i'm able to handle only having to buckle my belt.

Does your mom do that for you too?
