The List (http://www.rollingstone.com/features/coverstory/featuregen.asp?pid=1917)
This is a joke right? Jack White? Kurt Cobain? They aren't extremely good at guitar. Angus Young at 96? Sick, he oughta be higher.

Well, their top 10 is a decent bunch and would be hard to argue with, although I would put Warren Haynes up there. And yes, Angus Young at 96 is just wrong. But this is Rolling Stone, and it's not the first time they've f'd up. Just another list that will be argued about.

Is this list just released?
I stopped reading Rolling Stone when it stopped being a cutting edge music journal and became another magazine to put Clothing and Vodka Ads.
Anyway; this list will do exactly what it's intended to do; invite discussion, which will stir debate, then argueing, then fights, and that would take years and cost thousands of lives, so what we really need, is a stupid and fultile gesture...
oh wait that's Animal House.
Eddie Van Halen? I won't even discuss where he is on the list. I thought it was an obvious typo when he wasn't even in the top ten.
Let's the Games Begin!!!...

12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana
13 Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead
48 Joe Perry of Aerosmith
3 overrated guitarists from 3 of the most overrated bands.
26 Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave
He makes some good riffs but that's it.

this list is purely subjective based on your personal taste - all those 'white boy blues' players: allman, clapton, haynes and perry sound pretty much all the same to me .... for no other reason because i'm just not really into that music
and i've never thought that talent mattered much when it come to great pop music
for my taste:
+ i'd put johnny ramone in the top five - not for talent, but for the legions of kids that picked up a guitar in his wake
+ i'd take jack white out all together and wait untill they substain a career first
+ the trio of sy guitarist moore, renaldo and o'rourke need to be higher
+ j mascis and doug martsch have to be on any list of great guitarists
+ and where the fuck is bob stinson?

YEAH!!! Four albums is, like, TOTALLY nothing.

Dead.
WOCKA-WOCKA-WOCKA.
But you're right, it's evil that Mascis isn't on there.
Angus Young not in the top ten is just plain retarded. Same with Kevin Shields. And Eddie Van Halen. And Johnny Greenwood. And The Edge, motherfuckers.
Wait...since when did Rolling Stone write about MUSIC? I call shenanigans.

Tom Morello should be higher up. I mean the man has created hundreds of sounds that werent previously considered impossible on a guitar. Doesnt that count for something?

Well, i'll just get sucked in again...
there's so much subjective here. Theyre obviously factoring in non-guitar stuff, that's all. Hence Cobain, someone who I can't imagine added a thing to the craft of playing rock guitar, or just guitar. Hey, he started and symbolized an entire genre of music and wrote some amazing stuff, but in terms of the Instrument?
Someone mentioned Les Paul. Les Paul should not rank on the list; He IS rock Guitar, perhaps sharing with Leo Fender. I mean come ON; Les Paul patented the fucking thing, the Solid-Body guitar with Pickups, as well as inventing some of the very first multi-track recording machines. This list exists Only because guitarists like Les Paul lived.
And having said that, Les Paul is an amazing, amazing guitarist.
Eddie Van Halen?
Again just the facts;
Guitar Player magazine has a readers poll every year. When VH1 came out Eddie won Best New Guitarist. He then proceeded to win Best Guitarist each year, every year, that they finally just retired him from the category. Ditto with many other guitar publications. Others had used the Floyd Rose and Two-Handed tapping but when the song 'Eruption' came out on VH1, even seasoned guitarists scratched there heads asking how he was doing what they were hearing. People thought it was sped up tape or a guitar synth; it was eddie, a guiat, and amp, a little flange, a little echo, and... Eddie.
Why do I let these things suck me in???

This list is nothing but a cock-up, but thank god they left that guy off. Technically he's phenomenal, but the guy has NEGATIVE soul, his playing is so cold and precise. Rock is at least half passion and raw emotion, NONE of which this guy exudes when playing. If you're putting him on there, you might as well put on a robot like Buckethead.
Holy Christ on a tricycle, is this list for real?!? NO JOHNNY MARR?!?! TRAVESTY.

82 David Gilmour of Pink Floyd
17 Jack White of the White Stripes
They should switch spots.
Steve Vai should be on it
85 Randy Rhoads
86 Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath
WRONG! They both should be much higher.
11Kirk Hammett of Metallica
12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana
Kurt is extremely overrated on his guitar playing skills, but they had to follow the "every list we ever make about music we have to add nirvana" rule. And Kirk should not be that high, if it werent for the two guitarists above (roades and iommi), he probably wouldnt be on the list.
