And don't turn it into another NYC vs. DC thread. I was just wondering everyone's opinion because I love both cities' cultural "outlets" and really, these two cities seemed packed to the gills with the things, something that really no other city in the country has going for it.

I fall on the sides of thinking that NYC is better for art and DC is better for history. Simple, no?

Because you can compare the museums without slamming the people.

I'd say DC and NY are about tied. Best museum in the world is in Paris, and I'm not even talking about the Louvre.
The Mus‚e d'Orsay. Phenomenal.

Second place goes to the Museum of Torture in Amsterdam.
But that's just me.

Damn all you horrible not-funny people.

Both cities are jam-packed with too many museums. No other city is like that in America. Since we're mostly people from either city here, a lot of which often travel between the two, IT'S NOT A CRAZY QUESTION. Don't be gay.

For me? DC Hands Down

Air + Space you can see

The actual Wright Brothers Flyer
Spirit of St. Louis
Chuck Yeager Bell X-1
Apollo 11 Command Module
John Glenn's Mercury Capsule

And that's just the Lobby!

By the way; the Air and Space Museum is the most widely visited museum in the world.

Then you can cross the mall and hit the Archives and see The Declaration of Independence and a few other cool documents

NY is great but for real history; it's DC

Its not that great, i mean you get to look at it for 3 seconds before the asians with big ass cameras push you out.

As for DC musuems, probably one of the best in the nation and world is housed here. The Holocaust Musuem. Its something everyone should see at least once, very informative.

Being a New Yorker, it's easy for me to visit the different museums here. In fact, just a few weeks ago, I went to the Metroplitan Museum of Art and the next weekend to the Museum of Natural History. I've been to these places and others numerous times and never tire of them.
A few years ago, I took my son to D.C. for a short vacation since he wanted to go to the Smithsonian and the Aerospace Museums respectively. It took over 2 days alone to roam through the halls of the Smithsonian!! Simply great!! I look forward to doing it again someday.
In my mind, both cities have wonderful museums and centers of culture. It would be unfair to say which one is the best since they both offer different things for different people.
My recommendation?....visit both cities to enjoy their individual ambience and don't compare...just enjoy!!!

D.C. has the Newseum

Isn't that one temporarily homeless?

Check out the 16 inch gun at the Navy museum. They've got cool models and has New York got the inside of a nuke sub control room? Huh?

Ok then.

Air & Space is great, but wait'll we get the new aviation museum out at Dulles! It'll be bitchin!
The Indian museum will rock also.

I bet D.C. has better flags, too.
We got the tattered Fort McHenry flag and Don't tread On Me at the Smithsonian and the Iwo Jima flag at the Marine Corps museum...

Went to the Holocaust museum in DC. It was okay but if it had Knights, armour and sword it would have been even better.

Been to the Metropolatian museum in NY and the Armour, Knights and Sword wing rocked. Too bad they didn't have any at the Cloisters.

Went to the Philadelphia Museum and did my Rocky routine, it was okay too.

U.S.S. Intrepid (Aircraft carrier) with warplanes and helicopters on the Deck freaking rock. And have you ever been to West Point?

Being from NY, Im kinda biased, but when I seriously think about it? In NY I only know the museum of natural history, metropolitian museum of art and, uh..... thats it. I know theres more but...
DC on the other hand, the whole place is historical and artistic, and I just think there are more places in DC to go to.

Well, my usual DC route, when showing someone for the first time.

Air + Space: Probably not the best place to start, this building is measured in acreage. remember, it has a few dozen very large aircraft, and its all inside, and the exhibits you walk through are actually interesting...

Then i start the circuit. Walk west to The Smithsonian Museum [fact i never knew till a few years back, Most of the Museums at the mall are a part of the Smithsonian Institute, not just the big building that I'm referring to with the trains, and the cool older stuff...

Then to the Washington monument. Never been up there, but it sure looks cool. All nice a redone too; I remember when it was always 'out of order'...

...then down along the reflecting pool [thats it, yes?] to the Lincoln Memorial. Best view of DC, in my opinion, is from the top there with Abe. Take the time to go to the almost hidden Museum part there; cool stuff. The man was a tortured soul in a tortured time; and imaging you're forrest gump or martin luther king...

[skipping the holocaust museum which is a walk from here usually because after Lincoln I go to...]

The Wall. Been there at noon. At midnite. At 3:30am drunk. And it just blows the top of my head off. I actually photographed it; I mean starting from the tiny 8 inch high panels at each end to the huge panels at center. i'm tall, and I have been asked to rub a name for someone who can't reach it 3 times; I was scared shitless. Seriously, that how much that wall affects me. The tears are a given, not crying for me, just, I cant describe it...

Then to cheer things up I go sit with the big brass Einstein infront of the National Science Institute...

Now its Natual History and American History time baby! Come On! Who hasn't seen the huge Elephant or whatever it is? The Blue Whale hanging from a wall, and Ice may be a girl thing, but its pretty fucking cool looking at Diamonds that because of the conditions long ago are blue, green, yellow. It's easier then you think to tell the real stuff thats there from the fakes that replace some of the pieces when they go on tour.

And the bugs! The insect part; the fossil part; the dinosaur part and Geology part, the Cave man part, the fish part, OK some of these are weak in my opinion, so...

to The archives. The only good time to go is when its empty, or you will be hurried along as you try to see whats left of the Declaration of Independence, and surrounding documents. personally the archives are best when there's a theme there [there always is]. Some themes are weak [I was there once when it was famous Posters, not for me...] and some rocked, the Military stuff; the Surrender papers and stuff like that = cool for me...

..then its art time, cross the Navy thing there with the world on the ground [why do i feel some of this is out of order]..to the National Gallery and The Calder mobile and giant swiss army knife; I'm sorry but I do not find this so great, and I know I should, and I know Art people say I'm dead wrong, and theyre right. I just dig fighter jets and giant madagasgar hissing cockroaches...

And the Capitol, which is ok, but doesn't blow me away...

Wow did I skipped a lot, but thats actually the circuit I used to show someone the essentials. Jefferson and the White House are kinda off the track there...

wow this is long

And my personal favorite in all of DC. In the National Museum of American Art, James Hapton's Throne.

I beg you to read about this man, and what he made, and I'm agnostic!

The Wall....
The tears are a given, not crying for me, just, I cant describe it...

It is overwhelming. I don't know a single soul who has been there and not shed a tear. The Wall itself is amazing, but the statues of the soldiers, the look on their faces, just speaks volumes. It affects me so deeply.

There is an excellent flash web site of the Wall for those who can't visit in person. Just look at it, pick a few names at random and read the rememberances. Or, if you knew someone whose name is on the Wall, use the search.

Guilty on the FDR memorial.

Jefferson is indeed amazing, and under-appreciated; the shape of the space inside is like nothing else.

Which reminds me, back in sheesh...98?? 96??

They displayed the entire Aids Quilt for the last time. It was the last time because it had grown so big [17 football fields in area; I was told by a participant] that they simply can't display the entire thing; so from now on I guess it is only seen in parts. At night; thousands holding candles walking slowly to the lincoln memorial; I was on the steps and could see the lights.

Anyway I will have to find some pics I took of that. Wow.

TJ is probably my favorite spot in the city.

Just the design of the monument and it's placement on the river when the cherry blossoms are in bloom is spectacular.

And don't forget Arlington! I never get tired of seeing the changing of the guard, and the large amphitheatre-like structure behind the tombs of the unknown is beautiful.

And actually, here's MY question about the marine guards at the tombs of the unknown. These guys don't break for ANYTHING. But that spot is in clear view of the side of the Pentagon where the plane hit. In fact, the guard would have seen the plane well before it impacted. All planes HAVE to fly over the Potomac, so anything off course would have been obvious. I'm just wondering if something as so awful and sudden as a plan crashing into the Pentagon would have broken the guard from his duty. If he at least stopped to watch. Just something I was always curious about...

Not to bust your stones, Mojo, but they aren't marines---they're members of the US Third Infantry..."The Old Guard". I just like to get the facts straight about my brothers-in arms!!

TJ is probably my favorite spot in the city.

Mine, too. My favorite monument, my favorite Founding Father; seems fitting. Architecturally it blows the other monuments away. There's something almost spiritual about the place.

And don't forget Arlington! I never get tired of seeing the changing of the guard, and the large amphitheatre-like structure behind the tombs of the unknown is beautiful.

When I first moved here I lived a stone's throw from there. We could hear Taps being played every evening.

My other favorite monument is more of a statue, but so beautiful. In the Lady Bird Johnson Memorial Park, that sculpture of the seagulls flying just ahead of the waves... It's the Navy Marine Memorial, I believe. Definitely worth a side trip down the GW parkway.

And you're right about their discipline. It's a work of art to see these guys perform the changing of the guard. Absolute precision and human perfection.
