so i've been mulling this over for a little while now. i make shit money and honestly i'm exploited by my job. last week i put in 68 hrs- i used to get time&1/2 in vacation time, not pay, but iwas told i can't take a week off and they'd compensate me another way.

so i think- unionize. but i have no idea what to do and what to look out for, etc...

so far, i've found out that graphic artists are represented by local chapters of the graphic artists guild- associated with the uaw.

Just want to say my Grandfather had a meeting with Jimmy Hoffa in Washington DC, and conversed with him in Staten Island when Procter & Gamble was looking to bring in the Teamsters...

They are some pretty interesting stories if anyone wanted to hear...

My granddad helped form the union at Colgate Palmolive in Jersey City back in the 1940's. He attended the local Jesuit Labor School.
There was a time where there were a small group of Craftsman pushing to replace the Colgate Employees Union with the Teamsters. My grandfather was secretary of the union for over 35 years and never was opposed to his position. He and other members of the leadership went to Washington to meet with Jimmy and his people. They met in a very large office and Jimmy was wearing a white dress shirt, no tie, and he sat at the end of the very large table. Jimmy reached under the table and the doors to the room closed automatically.
They spoke and without going into detail, Jimmy's associate pissed off one of the Colgate members by saying the "Teamsters" would get voted in easily...
My grandfather tooik this as a challenge and proceeded to prove a point. It turns out the Colgate Employees Union did not have to hold a vote but the leaders wanted too, even against the advice of their own lawyer. It turns out that the vote was over 90% to stay with the Colgate Union.

When my grandfather later met with Jimmy at the Procter plant he said he gained respect for Jimmy. he said that Jimmy talked straight up with the Procter employees and told them that if they thought bringing the Teamsters in would guarantee no layoffs or downsizing, then to not vote them in.
My grandfather had a copy of the Colgate contract to show Jimmy and after Jimmy looked it over he said something to the effect that it was a better contract than the Teamsters could provide.

Grandad has a ton of great stories about his years with the Union. It'sa shame he never had a book written about them

As far as I know, you can contact the U.S. Department of Labor about your work conditions on an anonymous basis and inquire about what goes on and your desire to unionize. They will then advise you which unions represent your industry, whether it is AFL-CIO, or The Teamsters, etc.

You can also contact those unions seperately on your own, and they explain your conditions and they can refer you to whoever in their Unions handle your industry, which would then open the door for opening a union Local in your area or joining one near you.

Here's the websites for....
The Teamsters (http://www.teamsters.org/)
AFL-CIO (http://www.aflcio.org/)
U.S. Department of Labor (http://www.dol.gov/)

Of course there's also the Graphic Artist's Guild (http://www.gag.org/index.php) who you should inquire with as well. Most likely check with them first and they should be able to guide you on what you need to do.

Good Luck.

You might not have to unionize to get results. Go to the Department of Labor web site and do some research on the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This Act is to ensure that companies treat their employees fairly.

I used to belong to AFGE and I can honestly say that they are worthless. Did nothing but take $15 a check from me.

i belong to the IAPE which affiliated with the CWA approx 6 years ago. Alot of members tend to feel the union is worthless and their dues are being squandered but most of these people fail to recognize the good that unions can provide.

Our union at Dow Jones has won many an important grievance. In the past several years, with the market crash and massive layoffs, our company laid people off out of seniority and manipulated job titles to release who they wanted. The union was able to win almost all cases and get the employee re-instated and for others, large cash settlements above their severance.
They fought for "female contraceptive coverage" and won.

The union leaders dedicate ALOT of of their own time to help others and they need to be supported.
They organize and attend meetings, rallies, grievance processes, maintain a union web-site, supply union related items such t-shirts, buttons, flyers, etc...

Alot of Corporate Management have become thieves and would rather steal millions for themselves and cut the medical and dental coverage of the other employees, or just lay them off. Unions can't prevent downsizing but they can help protect FAIR labor practices and support all of the non-management people who remain employed.

a) You're unlikely to really unionize as a graphic designer. It's traditionally a non-union field and they can just Dr0p you for someone who won't make trouble.

b) If you have all this vacation time, what are they going to do? Let you take off, give you money for that time, or take away the time. What other option is there?
