I guess god is sending a sign to priests that molesting young boys is wrong. Who knew?

What's to figure out? The guy was a convicted pedophile and in prison-that means he's lower than whale shit!! Even the most hardened criminal is gonna try and make his bones whacking the likes of this piece of human dung!! I happen to be a pretty devout Roman Catholic but when I heard what this bastard had done, they couldn't punish him enough.
One more thing, it's people like this that have given the clergy of the Catholic Church a bad name. The vast majority of priests today are upstanding citizens and not child molesters. It's another case of a few bad apples.....

What is the "average life span" of your "average pedophile " in prison?
Any actuaries out there?

While I want this guy nothing but dead, doesn't it bother anyone how easily murders happen in prison? And even if this is a case of this being "allowed", that's STILL fucked up. I mean, how much more of a joke do have to make the "rehabilitation" aspect of prisons?

I wish you were right Reeshy, but it just isn't the case. The numbers are quite high, with priests all around stepping down at alarming rates. Tons go unreported too. I've been to five Catholic weddings this year and two of them were shocked by a priest (set to do the wedding) that was forced to step down. That's his punishment! F that, the church itself is an f'in joke the way they handled this over the years and even more now!

The whole story is sad, from the beating, to the victims, to the way the church hierarchy (Cardinal Law) shuffeled him around from church to church.

I could've called this one. As absurd as it sounds, inmates have a "code" where they inflict the most pain on those who have harmed children. John Walsh made an excellent point on Timothy McVeigh when he said that justice was not served, because McVeigh sat in protected solitary confinement. However, had he been released to the general prison population, a child murderer like him would have known justice all too well.

I don't think this is a good thing, because now the Church may be even more reluctant to give up info on sex abuse cases, knowing that this could be the result if their priests are sent to prison.

I know this.

That wasn't part of my statement/question.

Murders are "allowed" or "accepted" or shrugged off all the time in prison because the guy deserved it or was a REAL scumbag or to make the guards' lives easier or whatever. Look, I'm NOT saying these people don't deserve it...but they were NOT sentenced to die. They were sentenced to whatever time in jail they were given. The guards are there to PREVENT stuff like this.

I know the guards aren't supermen. They're understaffed, WAY underpaid and often working multiple jobs, so this reflects more on the poor resources alloted to our prison system. But still, this IS just tolerated because the guy "deserved it"...well, I'm sorry, but he didn't get that sentence, and when you're in the place where supposedly our law is executed (No pun intended), you'd think we'd be able to hold it up a little better. The automatic assumption is that a kid toucher is dead in jail because of what they are. I'm not arguing what they deserve...just that if you're not sentenced to death, well, it IS part of the system's "job" to keep you alive, and in general this does not seem to be the case.

Yes, one more scumbag is dead. But his death just helps breed an atmosphere were NOBODY is rehabilitated in ANY way, and HIS murdered could easily just end up back on the street. Is anyone really better off?

I'm telling you, we gotta tighten these things up. Too much free time in prison. There should be meals, work programs, brief exercise period and that's IT. The rest of the time is spent in the cell. No TV. No computers. None of that. Of course, that brings you to the problem of overcrowded prisons, which brings you to why these prisons are mostly overcrowded: unfair and over-reactionary drug laws. It's just one big, ugly, stupid cycle that nobody seems willing to change or fix at ANY level.

Very true. Much of the reason behind the last two sentences is that no politician, democrat, republican or other, wants to be conveyed soft on crime. There is much wrong with the system as a whole, all the way up the chain. We live in a society controlled by lawyers, and the threat of them.

The worst part of this story is that Geoghan's estate is going to sue Mass. claiming he should have been better protected. They'll settle for a million or so and his victims will still go empty handed.
