He's been retired 15 years, but tomorrow #49 Ron Guidry finally gets his day at Yankee Stadium.

I'll be there early, and I sure hope they have a full house when the ceremonies begin @ 2:30 P.M. On Dave Winfield Day, the stands were half empty during the festivities ; it was embarrassing.

I still remember the first time I saw Ron Guidry...it was between games of a doubleheader against the Red Sox at Shea Stadium, and Frank Messer was interviewing this skinny pitcher that just came up from Syracuse (the Yankees AAA farm team at the time). This was 1975. I was 9 years old and it struck me as odd that they would be interviewing this rookie.

I wondered if he would be any good.

Wow, it's been 15 years? Day-ummm.

This is weird, because just yesterday I was trying to describe Yankee Stadium to someone who had never been there.

But I was trying to describe the feel you get; like when you enter a gorgeous old cathedral or chapel; the sense of history is So there; I mean you can feel it.

Here's to Ron; and to #3 #4 and #5

Glad to see it. I dont remember much of Guidry, besides people saying he was past his prime, but no doubt a great Yankee.

He deserved that.I hate that son of a bitch for going in as a Padre.

I heard a good question the other day: Has any pitcher had a better year since Guidry in '78?
best I can figure is Gooden in '85
Guidry in 78: 25-3 9 shutouts 1.74 era 248 K's 72 BB's
Gooden in 85:24-4 8 shutouts 1.53 era 269 K's 69 BB's

It was a nice ceremony. Though it was scheduled to begin at 2:30, the crowd was way too sparse to begin at that time - in fact, they didn't open the gates until 2:00 ; it would have been impossible to fill the house in 30 minutes.

The festivities began at about 3:15, with a decent crowd (but plenty of empty seats). Plenty of fans with fresh new navy blue Guidry #49 t-shirts (and some with faded shirts that appeared to date back 20 years).

The Yankees almost traded Guidry to the White Sox in 1976, two years before his Cy Young season of 1978. During his speech, Guidry thanked "Mr. Steinbrenner" for not making that trade.

Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra, Don Mattingly, Graig Nettles, Hank Bauer, Dave Winfield, Rick Cerone and Dick Tidrow were all on hand.

Guidry was moved to tears when they retired his number and dedicated a plaque that will be placed in Monument Park. It was definitely an emotional ceremony. Too bad that so many fair weather fans couldn't figure out a way to make it to the ballpark in time for the ceremony.
