Its happened before to me......and its happening again.
i've liked a band fountains of wayne for a long time. and they have a new single out now "stacys mom". They are getting a serious push from mtv to get them to be the next thing. I mean like they are playing before the vmas or movie awards whichever is coming up. I'm bordering between feeling happy for them and saddened by the fact that they will be main stream.
do you feel happy or saddened when a band that you've enjoyed gets a push into the mainstream?

I'm saddened for the quality of their music not the band itself, its their decision to sell-out, unfortunatly, many bands take that route. MTV has ruined many, MANY bands. And of course what would a thred about the decline of music quality be without the ever-popular Metallica reference.

I agree that I don't like a band selling out, but yet I want them to be successful though as well. I believe in artists who make good music being rewarded for their work. I think that so long as they keep true to their music and creativity it's
fine.
That doesn't mean I have a problem with bands who experiment or change their music style over time. I like that as well if the music is still good quality.

Tricky situation.
I've loved this band from day #1, and I AM happy that they're finally catching on, and without sacrificing (IMO) anything that's really "true" to their sound.
"Selling out" is ridiculous. Bands should make money and be popular. Especially good ones like this. And they make pure power pop. Power pop is the cult genre notorious for putting out INSANELY catchy songs that SHOULD be huge but aren't . So if a power pop can be huge, yes, that's a good thing.
"Selling out" to me is only when a band (Usually a punk band or underground hip-hop act) who so passionately and loudly and vocally rail about what's wrong with everything that's mainstream in their genres and sounding like everyone else and dressing the same and having the flashy videos...and then they end up doing JUST that by signing up with the major and putting the video on MTV and selling the shirts at the mall. Success is FANTASTIC, but if you preach like you DON'T want it, don't accept it or go for it so blatantly. It's a fucking LIE.
Fountains of Wayne getting a media push? Great.
Fugazi signing to Interscope and playing on the VMA's and selling shirts at Hot Topic? AWFUL AND EVIL.

I had never heard of Fountains of Wayne until they came up in the musical go fish thread. So I just went to mtv.com and watched Stacy's Mom...
That video made me re-live the horror of my high school years. Two of my old boyfriends from that era STILL Dr0p by my parents' house every now and then to "catch up" with my Mom and send her flowers for Mother's Day. Did those assholes ever give me flowers? Hmph.
And yes, you perverts, she still looks great.

The Goon Squad is the underground. Declaring war on everything... Declaring war on nothing. We are your children raised on ritalin and prozac, biting the hand that's reared us... pissing down our heros throats.
All we are is all you have made us...Given nothing. Taking everything. Making this world a place of our own.

I easily fit through doors.
How else would I get thrown out of so many?

I'd like someone in this thread to get pushed off of the MTV building.
Does that count?
