question about telescopes

my brother and I are looking ino buying one . We really have no idea as far as what is good and bad. The most we know at this point is that the wider the apature, the better the telescope. What are the name brands to look for? How much money should we put into it?

Google for "buying a telescope", check out online stores... you'll quickly get an idea for price features. Personally I've never had much luck with telescopes, but that's probably because I've always tried to use them in the NYC area :)
