View Full Version : What's your favorite cop show of all time?

And yes, feel free to choose "Cop Rock" if you feel you must.
I've been watching the newly released DVD collection of the first two seasons of "Homicide: Life On The Streets", and all it's done is strengthen my feelings that it is THE greatest cop show of all time. Funny, brutal, real and, best of all, NOT overdramatic and full of neverending, bloated plotlines (At least not for the first four years), I don't think anything besides "Hill Street Blues" (And maybe "Murder One") has even come close. Where else are you gonna find a show where the new character, the one the viewer is supposed to be following as the series begins, spends the first few episodes by trying to solve the brutal murder of a little girl...and ultimately fails? Hell, one of the episodes is nothing but him and his partner grilling a suspect in an interrogation room. Where else do you have a cop show where one of the main characters leaves the show in the third season...by killing himself?
Best of all, I love the Baltimore setting. And given that it was actually shot there (Even shows like "ER", supposedly set in Chicago, are never there except for rare external shots) and produced by Charm City native Barry Levinson really helpd lend a sense of "realness" to the series. 95% of the extras are all Baltimore natives or real off-duty local cops, so everything just "feels" right.
I honestly loved this show, and I'm STILL mad it's off the air after all these years.
So what's YOUR favorite?

Since yer the expert, I almost feel bad answering. I love NYPD Blue. I think it's a great show, whether it's realistic or not. I sympathise with Sypowicz, being a drunk fat guy with a hot old lady. Also, I apologize for my long absence and my past aggrivated verbal assaults. I just found a place where no politics are involved, and I'm real happt there. And I still love listening to Ron & Fez here every night live....

I really can't stand cop shows. None of them can capture the true essence of the job. About the only one that even comes close would have to be "Barney Miller"-no joke!! The insanity of that show and the characters depicted were the closest thing to working in law enforcement that was shown on TV!!!

I'm with you on Homicide, Mojo. That was a phenomenal show and one that, due to its scheduling, I was never able to catch as much as I wanted to. I've been considering picking up the box set for that very reason.
As the icing on the cake, how can you not like a show in which one of the plot lines is the murder of a Yankees fan at Camden Yards? ;)

[color=purple]Hill Street Blues = my all time fave. I still catch the reuns on Bravo every once in a while, 20 years later and it still holds up.
NYPD Blue is a close second. Dennis Franz' Sipowicz is the most compelling character in the history of TV Drama. And much like Hill Street Blues, they do a good job of showing both the best & worst of humanity.
Just for the shear fun factor, I'll throw an honorable mention to Miami Vice. Growing up, I loved that show!
Never seen Homicide, but I know others who are also big fans. Maybe I'll rent those DVDs one night.

Rory Hampton, former radio producer and well know Aryan: <u>"GaryWyze IS the Godfather!"</u> ... <u>EastSideDave: Forget Jesus, GaryWyze is my savior</u> ... Chairman Kaga, Chairman of the RF.NET Message Board: <u>"Gary is hysterical, absolutely hilarious, he truly is The Don</u> ... DJevelED... I live down the block from Fish (Abe Vigoda). Just thought you'd find that interesting.
I see him at the bus stop sometimes, and occasionally buying ham at the deli.

Homicide was the best. Especially the early episodes too. How much was the DVD set Mojo?
I've seen it at stores like Target, Best Buy and Costco for between $40 and $45. 4 DVD set, BEAUTIFUL transfer...the show never looked or sounded better, AND the episodes are FINALLY shown in order. NBC and CourtTV showed the first season mostly out of order, so it's nice to see things as they were supposed to be shown.
Gary, seriously, check this show out when you get the chance. It started the same year as "NYPD Blue", and I watched both shows at first before sticking with just "Homicide" since it often ended up on opposite of "Blue". It was THAT good.

The Shield kicks ass and is the best show on TV now, at least when the third season starts up.
Hunter was my favorite back in the day.

Then check out "Homicide" if you haven't already, my good man...
The creative staff behind "The Wire" pretty much all worked on or created "Homicide", the shows both are set in Baltimore and lots of the cast members have been on both shows. Good stuff.
