View Full Version : Does appearances at restaurants affect service?

My bro and I went out to eat lunch at a restaurant in plain clothes (shorts and shirt) and it seemed that the waiter paid more attention to the other guests than to us. In fact, we had to remind the waiter to get our drinks for us even though he asked us what we wanted to drink in the first place.
I know that waiters and waitresses work for tips but does one's clothes affect the tip of service you get? Like if I was wearing a suit or tie, would they think I would tip them better thus they would be more helpful?
I remember when I was younger and me and my friends went to celebrate a birthday, the staff was like watching us but when we left a BIG tip, the staff person was like "Next time you come, look for me" , pointing us out to the other staff at hand and was like extremely friendly as opposed to before.
So do staff people have an expectation of tips based on a person's appearance?
Thanks.

exactly, they're afraid the younger tippers arent good. My friends and I went out to dinner for my birthday, and the place is pretty empty, and you could tell that people the staff was watching us. The waitress wasnt that bad, but she didnt really treat us like regular costomers. I dont know if the tip I left was big (doubled the tax). The food was good, but service sucked. I will admit me and my friends are a little loud, and I tell them to shut up.

I think the question should maybe be when Doesn't appearences matter.
We judge people visually first before anything else, so I guess it's just natural. And I wear shorts and T-shirts all summer long; if someone gives me an attitude, screw them.
And honestly; I will never, ever, ever get the Fascination of having to get all Dressed Up if you want to eat a big frigging steak at Mortons or someplace.
Like Frank Zappa said; there's more of us Ugly Mofo's anyway.

appearence doesnt matter to priests because you're behind that thing where you cant see (I bet those priests can look through and see you on the other side!!!) or, when you're doing it assdoggy with one... nevermind.

The better a restaurant is, the less your appearance should matter, as long as you're within their dress code. The richest people are rarely the best dressed - the wannabes are. I don't think I've ever noticed that the way I was dressed affected my service; I think it is probably very much more based on how you treat the people serving you.
If you go in expecting lackluster service because you feel like you're underdressed, it's likely to be somehow conveyed to the employees and they will probably treat you as such, although I doubt it would be intentional.

Mike is correct. When I'm dressed up, I can make it down to courtside at a Knicks game and nobody says anything. But if I'm wearing jeans, t-shirt and a stupid cap, forget it - "let me see your ticket!"

I frequent this restaurant all the time and their service is usually up to par that's why I was surprised about the service. My bro didn't want me to leave a tip but I did since we go there frequently.
I always treat people with respect and I usually over look bad service as a result the person is having a bad day, doesn't like what they do, etc. But why do they have to take it out on people they are supposed to help?

If it's a diner or cafe, they shouldnt have any problem with your coming in with a tee shirt and shorts.

Of course appearances matter, whether you like it or not.
Next time the waiter/ waitress is slow with the drinks and the place is not busy, try going to the manager and asking the manager to tell the waiter/waitress that your drinks need refilling.
" and they ask me why I drink"

i wouldn't think so...
one time when me and my wife were dating we went to the Binghamton Restaurant(Boat) in Edgewater. There was a big party in another part of the restaurant and our service was extremely slow. After 20-30 minutes of giving the drink order and getting no drink, we left. All i could conclude is all the waiters were catering to this big party for a big tip.

Yes, your appearance most certainly matters regarding a respected eatery. It is frowned upon and usually your service will be there but lacking. Their "poor" service is because your not an attractive patron to the restaurant or the restaurant's image.
The richest people are rarely the best dressed - the wannabes are.
I tend to disagree. Wannabes are typically flamboyantly dressed and will name Dr0p designers to the point of nausea.
Fine clothing and fashion are quite simply very expense, a prelude to a "great dresser" is having the funds to pull it off. The majority of people wouldn't be able to point out a well dressed man or woman, you have to have fashion sense and an eye for it.
