Said of Pluto Nash:

The Plot: Eddie Murphy is a suave nightclub owner tussling with the mob. Oh yeah, it's the year 2087, and his bar is on the moon.

Turkey Trivia: "Nash," which had been in development since 1980, sat on the shelf for two years before crash-landing in theaters. Murphy refused to promote it, though we can hardly blame him. What could he say about a movie whose trailer begins, "Somewhere between Earth and Uranus, you'll find Pluto Nash"?

What the Critics Said: "Eddie Murphy delivers his lines with that weirdly relaxed, fake-enthusiastic bonhomie that telegraphs, just below the surface, a what-am-I-doing-here? bafflement desperate enough to match Elvis Presley's in his worst bombs." -- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The Aftermath: "Pluto" took in a paltry $2.2 million in its opening weekend, with Variety's Peter Bart declaring it "Instant Ishtar" and adding that its opening "seemed more like a boycott than a bow." Murphy followed up with back-to-back bombs "I Spy" and "Showtime" before retreating to the safety of the kiddie genre, where he hit with "Daddy Day Care."

do you forget that clerks cost like 29,000 dollars. thats it. after it won the film festivals, and was re-released in theatres, i know it made at least a few million. no way blair witch could even be compared to that, especially since the second one tanked so bad

Trying to figure out all of the information fromBox Office Guru (http://www.boxofficeguru.com), it's probably My Big Fat Greek Wedding, grossing $241.4 million that's the highest grossing low budget movie.

And Waterworld wade 88.2 million, so even though it sucked and it lost money, it wasn't financialy crushing.

Clerks made only $3 million in the theaters, but being that it only cost $29,000 to make, that's a 10,000% return on investment and is impressive, but not what they are going by here.

And they probably aren't including Giggli yet because it's still in the theaters.

Business Data for
Waterworld (1995)

Budget
$175,000,000

Gross
$267,575 (Czech Republic)
DEM 32,388,597 (Germany)
$6,690,000 (Italy)
$167,000,000 (Non-USA)
$12,649,200 (UK)

œ1,645,454 (UK) (13 August 1995)
$88,246,220 (USA)
$255,200,000 (worldwide)

Cost $175 million, only made $88 million domesticly, but made $255 million combined so it did turn a profit of $80 million. Not the return you would probably want on that big an investment.

I'm surprised that the Garbage Pail Kids Movie didn't make the list.

I think Clerks made $30 million, because I remember Kevin Smith in the JASBSB commentary that all Askew movies made about $30 million; no more, no less.

Halloween was the most successful independent movie before Blair witch. It didn't cost them much for the William Shatner mask and I also just read the the license plates in the movie are from California even though the movie was based in Illinois.

Besides domestic and international box office, there's also videos; pay-per-view; HBO,Cinemax, etc; network TV and syndication packages. Most movies make money eventually.

What exactly does the second one have to do with it? The first one was made for basically nothing, and it made over $100 million. Clerks made significantly less in the theater, and didn't start getting serious attention until it hit video.

Movies usually need to gross twice the budget to make a profit, since about half the ticket price goes to the theater.

So Waterworld would have needed to make over $350 million before realizing a profit.
