View Full Version : How do I tell my boss I want a transfer?

I absolutely HATE my job. A job was posted recently that I'm interested in. I inquired HR about it and I want to apply. Unfortunately, your manager has to sign off on the application in order for you to apply. That sucks-- if I don't get the position, I'm stuck in the same shitty job AND my boss knows I want to leave.

Anyway, I'm nervous about telling her. One of our production editors just left and we're training someone new. At the end of the month, another prod. editor is leaving to start her own company. I was going to tell her on Friday, but she had a mini-meltdown about one of my projects (not at me, but at the managing editor). I'm afraid if I tell her I want to leave, she'll go over the edge.

Any advice?

You're in a tough situation, what I would do is lay low and tough it out for a little while, while the smoke clears from the problem with that project. What I did early on with my boss was make it clear that I wanted to progress in my company, so I can sit down with him and talk about different job postings and discuss it...there wasn't a whole lot of openings granted, but I think he appreciates the fact that I respect him enough to get his advice on other positions in the company. I also make it clear that I'm happy working for him. You may want to go with that approach, that you're very happy working for her, but you feel like you would like a change, do it in a way that you're complimenting her while asking her advice and trying to get her to sign off on the application.

You just have to approach her with reasons other than "I don't like it here." Look at the job you're looking to transfer into and fit your reasons for wanting it to the details of the job. Basically use positive reasons and not negative. But you may be right in worrying that she will be aware that you want out afterward. So you should probably also emphasize a need for change - something along the lines of you needing to learn new skills and taking on new challenges. And if you sense that she resents you for trying to get out then you will want to look for other jobs to transfer to if you don't get this one, using the "need for change" line to justify it to her.

It is also important that you do this as formally and professionally as posible. Put everything in writing - an application for the new job with resume, and a written letter to her requesting the transfer - whatever the formal process may be. That way, if you start to get retribution from her for wanting out you have a record of the events that you can go over her head to deal with if you need to. I always got screwed in my old corporate job when I tried to handle things informally. But once I learned to things by the books and in writing I got to write my own ticket to transfers and promotions and such, and avoided much of the personal feuds and drama that goes on.

Good luck.

Fuzz,

Just be polite and professional. You can only control the way you handle it. You have to do what is best for you.

You seem to be someone who works hard and cares about people so you owe them nothing. You've earned everything you received and more.

Best Of Luck!

Yerdaddy has it right, accent the positive. Talk about all the things you've accomplished in your current position. Talk about the goals, ambitions, challenges you seek and how this transfer will be a step towards achieving them. Good Luck.

Throw in a couple of corporate catch phrases like "career advancement" and "long-term goals".

"Mmmmkay?"

Oh and good luck!

Alice, people who work understand things. if you simply tell her you feel the other position is better suited and you would be happier there, not cause the people, but the job, then i think she'll understand.

Ok, I did it. My boss was very cool about it. She signed my application, but I'm hoping there won't be tension if I don't get the position.

Yuck-- I feel like I drank 30 cups of coffee. BLEH!

I think there would be more tension if you left the company altogether. Based on what you previously said about the high turnover in the office, your boss might have "taken it personally" and made your final days a living hell because she might have thought you were leaving her in the lurch.

However, by applying for another job within the same company, she would have to realize that you're just trying to move on to bigger and better things within the company.

Good luck Fuzzy!

Alice, if there ever is tension, just sit your boss down and tell her the whole reason, tell her you ddint wanna stick her, but you had to get away from everyone else. she'll understand that. believe it or not, i am people's boss, and i hate everyone who used to wrok my shift. i told my boss, and he switched my shift. so boss's are understanding

Oops-- apparently my boss wasn't as cool about it as I thought.

I told our production assistantr I had her sign my internal transfer request. The PA asked when I did that. I said, "Before your meeting with Ken and Lu (our boss)." Apparently she was in a pissed off mood and then took it out on Ken And the PA.

I have a headache!

don't worry too much, you've done nothing wrong...

if it helps i can lend you my "101 Ways To Kill Your Boss" or "Killing Bosses For Dummies" books... just leave them lying around your desk...

if she is being uncivil and has taken this personally, go above her to the next level and make them aware of your feelings... give it a week or so first and see how things go...

"Hey there! Guess what I found? It's the weirdest thing! Pictures of you, Lu, a mountain goat, a jug of Crisco and a French maid outfit!

How 'bout that transfer now.....BITCH!"

Too harsh?

Fuzzy Dear..

Just load that handbag with as much white-out, staples, pens and other office supplies as you can... then make a run for it.

Besides what happened to that little shop you and I were going to open?

I wouldn't assume this is hostility toward you. You said she's losing half her staff, which sucks for her. So it can't come as good news that you want to transfer, but that doesn't mean she's going to take it out on you. Either way, that's why I say just do everything in writing and overtly professionally. That cuts off her options for sabotaging your transfer or carrying out retribution against you. And if all else fails you can kick your own ass in her office and get to go home with a years' salary, flight coupons and a box full of office supplies.
