MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Former Olympic hockey coach Herb Brooks, who led the Americans to the "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union, died Monday in a car accident, a state official said.

Brooks, 66, coached the 1980 Olympic team that won the gold medal in Lake Placid, N.Y. He returned to lead the 2002 U.S. Olympic hockey team to a silver medal.

The state official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

I'm going to be positive now. One of the great moments ever in sports. It wasn't about hockey, it was about a bunch of college kids competing and beating teams thay had no business being on the same ice on. The classic American underdog story. And Herb Brooks was at least as resposnible for it as anyone else. Today is a horribly sad day in the world of sports.

Relax people, the story broke at 5:40, leaving only about 20 total minutes of airtime left in the show. If they tried to get someone on it would have to be immediate, and they might be the ones informing the guest that he died. Anyway, none of the callers brought it up. Now they have the great Kenny Morrow on talking about it.
