BAGHDAD, Iraq - A close aide to Saddam Hussein says the Iraqi dictator did in fact get rid of his weapons of mass destruction but deliberately kept the world guessing about it in an effort to divide the international community and stave off a U.S. invasion. There's a report that's going to come out that lists some of the evidence we've found of WMD and, I think, some evidence that Saddam had the WMD recently but got rid of them.

Unfortunately, I think they said it's going to be something like 6 MONTHS before they've compiled it all.

Had it been found out that Saddam had destroyed his WMD for this reason AHEAD of time...should we still have invaded?

Iran directly supported and sponsored more and deadlier terrorist attacks than Saddam ever did.
The same could probably be said for Syria.
How did Iraq get to the front of the line?
After all, in October of last year, the CIA told Bush that Hussein would not use whatever WMDs he had unless he was under attack and about to go down.
Initially I was for the war for months, then I realized that it was a decision that was more emotional than rational.
My first clue that this was a mistake was the glee that Rumsfeld displayed in discussing sending troops into harms way, as well as the way Bush strutted about, talking trash.
Having known a number of men who had commanded Marines in far off and largely forgotten places like Pelelieu, Tarawa, and the Chosin Reservoir, and talked to them extensively about it, as well as general conversations about committing troops to battle; their demeanor and attitude contrasted sharply with Rumsfeld and Bush.
Saddam is bad and I was fine with getting rid of him. Nothing convinced me that we had not tried 3 other means to do so: 1) foster a general uprising, 2) sponsor and/or encourage a coup d'etat, or, 3) assassinate the bastard.

Any of those 3 would have gotten rid of him and we'd have, what, about 200 fine young service members with us today instead of dead.

If somone tried to kill your pop's, what would YOU do? Not that this was justified simply for that reason alone. Just because we cannot find Sadam doesnt mean he didnt exist either you know. Just because we cant find Osama also doesnt mean he didnt exist. Its a time game. That game will likely be used by liberals to make the populace believe that the President acted impudently and unjustifiably. BUT, the rest of the world also was in favor of invasion before those 18 words were uttered in the State of the Union speech. You guys can whine all you want, but we had the power and the right to do what we did. Its sad that any Americans died for this, and hopefully someday when Iraq is a free society and its population is enjoying living in a free culture will the rest of the mid east view Iraq an example of how freedom can create freedom for all religions and cultures. Where we live in a world where war is not status quo in a mid east. Liberals love strife. Its the only way to get their guys in office. The rest of us are really trying to DO something about problems. Liberal use this type of situation as exploitive fodder for their candidates, but they continually fail to see that their actions are not as effetive as results in swaying public opinion. Thats why they want to dumb down the children is schools and why they support programs where ideas like gay schools or grading whre no one is ever really "wrong" in testing. This allows future voters to eventually pull levers for candidates that promise utopia when reality is not based on utopia. Utopia is an Ideal and unworkable. Despite their best intentions, which is a noble on their part, but fails to see their reality as something that can exist in Nature as a plausible alternative to Human Nature.

Besides the scientist that is the subject of the report cited by FURIE, we were told that the order had gone out to destroy WMDs by the son-in -law of Hussein who also informed us of the nuke program back in the mid-90s.
His information on the nuke program was excellent. I don't know why we didn't believe this other stuff.
Since the war, we have the story of the nuke scientist with the nuke parts buried in his yard. Perhaps Saddam had trained ants to continue his nuke program.
There were also doubtfull CIA reports.
All of this contrasts sharply with the arguments put forth by Bush, Rice, and Cheney which made it look like Iraq was about to get nukes or give WMDs to terrorists to attack the US.
Their other arguments for going to war had been challenged and largely shot down.
This 'imminent threat' argument was all they had, and day by day it is appearing to be a bogus argument.
I am furious that, what, 200 US troops have been killed so far and even more wounded because of a bogus argument.

It must not be true. Or at least unverifiable. If it were proven, pretty much all of this debate could be ended right now because you wouldn't need much more of a golden Al-Queda/Iraq link. If it was reported, I too would like to see what the details were, and why the story seems to have faded away...

I think that's the key here. I think we SHOULD have gotten rid of Saddam and co.. I just question again and again why the administration kept giving the VERY clear indication that we couldn't wait for ANYTHING and had to go now-now-NOW!!! The implication was clear: Saddam had WMD and was either already selling them or about to or was going to use them on Israel or could use them on us ASAP. THAT'S what the crux of our invasion was about. It's fantastic we've freed these people...but that wasn't the main selling point! I don't take issue with WHAT was done...but WHY it was done and HOW it was sold to the American people and the world.

I agree. I recall over and over on the board before the war, MOJO kept asking "why now?" and not getting much of an answer.
The administration, when asked would say stuff like "...we don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud", and saying that Saddam would have a nuke "...soon".
They kept implying that they had information that they couldn't release to the public that indicated an imminent threat. We couldn't wait autumn, or give the UN inspectors even a few more months time.
We now know they were basing opinions on intelligence that was years old, and were $electively ignoring other intelligence that didn't fit with their preconceived ideas.
They formed an opinion and then sought that which would support it and discarded the rest.
This is intellectually dishonest.
This dishonesty has gotten about 200 of our military killed and much more wounded, and I'm pissed off about it.
Iran's support for terrorism has been much greater than Iraq's, so has Syria's, and probably Libya as well.
I also don't like having over half of our deployable Army in western asia, when there is so much trouble brewing in eastern asia, from Korea to Indonesia.

I hear saddam might of moved some of his wmds to syria. To help the hezbolla terrorist group attack israel. I also heard hezbolla is going to try to start a war with israel. Israel in the event of a war with syria and hezbolla would likely go all the way to demascus resulting in a regime change of syria. This would be good for the United States but also bad a war would likely destroy the "road map to peace."

"The sight of blood that must be spilled so that we may maintain our Oil fields" Primus- Too Many Puppies

To think Oil didn't at the very least play some part in this war is crazy. The amount of easily extractible oil. and the amount of Natural Gas in the world is quickly running out, . Both resources are quickly reaching their peaks, and when they do the price will sky rocket. SE Asia (Mostly China and India) are developing and will require an enormous amount of natural resources. We, the US, a country of only 280 million people used 7 billion barrels of oil last year, a figure that goes up anually. Bush comes from an oil family, I don't think that can be over looked. US energy companies run the country, and will profit enourmosly via drilling contracts. and it just so happens that Iraq has the second biggest oil fields, the potential to be the world leader in oil, 110-trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and estimates of an additional 150,000-trillion cubic feet. At the very least we may be trying to secure our future energy demands, at the worst we may be trying to control a sizeable amout of what runs the world.

MOJO, hand me that fly swatter.
Thank you.

If we get Iraq up to it's full oil producing potential the price of Oil will go down

New to the oil markets, sonny?
Had you been following oil prices and production over the years, you would have seen quite a lack of logical connection between the two.
You would have also noticed that OPEC strictly regulates member's production in order to keep the price of crude where it wants it.
Also you would have noticed that when some country outside of OPEC increased production enough to affect the price, OPEC merely cut it's own production in order to keep the price where it wants it.
Market expert Jim Kramer went off the other night on his radio show about how even he could not make heads nor tails and refused to invest in oil companies.
Anyway, go back and DO THE MATH as I suggested.
Go ahead, I dare ya.
(by the way, the 15 billion in exports is a very optimistic figure, plus you've got to figure that we won't get every Dr0p of even THAT.)
Let's have some numbers, there hotshot.
