What is it that causes the stomach to make growling noises when someone is hungry?

From what I know the growling is from the muscles contracting in your stomach when you're digesting food.
But when your stomach is full you can't hear the noises, but when it's empty you can.

Not sure about this, but its either:
a.) you're stomach contracting and making noises because your brain is trying to tell you that you're obviously hungry
b.) a build-up of gases inside your stomach because you have yet to eat anything in a considerable amount of time, and that build-up causes the noises in your stomach when it moves, or
c.) combo of both

The growling sound is the sound of air being squished around in your stomach and intestines. You just hear it more when youi're hungry because there's that much more empty space in your guts involved!
