I switched to verizon DSL because i hated getting those annoying instant messages from strangers trying to sell some get rich quick product. I am getting some new type of pop up ad which is a grey box with messenger service on top of that. how do i prevent this from happening?

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.2 at Download.com (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-1). I used to get those popups too, now they're gone.

What operating system do you use? I am using xp and I went to microsoft.com and disabled the messages.

Believe it or not I am actually in tech support so I can probably help. If the box popping up is msn messenger then you can disable that by going to "start" "run" "msconfig". Then go to the start up tab & look for msnmsgr & uncheck it. That will stop msn messenger from automatically starting up when first booting up your computer.
On the other hand if you get this when opening up msn the browser then this is part of that program & you can't stop it.
If this is an advertisement then that is pretty much a fact of life. We all get pop ups & that won't change by changing your ISP & has nothing to do with Verizon as said previously.

Hope this kinda helps. :)

That is 100% correct. The type of pop-ups you are talking about have to do with the Windows messenger service.. a built in thingy that tech people can use to send to other computers on their networks.. try it yourself.. go to start>run>then type in net send <an ip adddress> "a message" if you do something like net send localhost Hi! a pop up window should appear on your screen saying Hi!

Spammers figured out how to do this and now send ads that way. Disabling the messenger service will stop them from being able to do it.

As for normal pop up windows just go get the Google Toolbar 2.0. It comes with a pop up blocker that works very very well. It even keeps track for you of how many it has blocked. My work PC here is up to 163 blocked in the past few weeks.

As for the random IMs you said you were getting check to see if you have yourself listed in the AOL directory.. its the second or so tab in the Profile settings of AIM. Turn all that stuff off to stop from getting it.

Oh man. Those pop ups were the WORST. I got help from someone in another thread about his like 2 months ago.

How gay of Microsoft to have that set to ON default for their new users.

But you got all the help you need from Playful, so tell those windows to hit the bricks.
Uhh! I was Spybotting like crazy thinking it was some spyware shit. But I think I was MORE pissed to find it was Microsoft's doing.

At least it's gone.

The first thing I did when I got XP was to undo all the default setting Microsoft had put into place. Those instant messages, the MSN crap, remote computing all of it I disabled along with a lot of the effects that they added to make it more jazzy.

Where can I find those settings reef? Is it all in msconfig?

I'd really like to tailor my setting a little more too.

A lot of it is in the Control Panel by the Administrative Tools I believe, but I'm not too sure right now. I'll check when I get home tonight and post a reply with the info.

MSConfig is good too, especially for taking out of a lot of the useless stuff that MS likes to have start up with the system.

It's safe to uncheck most of what is in the start up tab of msconfig without hurting anything depending on what type of connection you have (pppoe/dhcp/etc). You can always go back in & check the stuff again & with WinXP & ME you have the system restore feature so just make sure before you start messin' around with stuff that you create a restore point & that way if you F**K things up you can restore your settings to what they were before you got into things.
