Alright, we saw him at Vengence, and we also saw him get the crap beat out of him on Smackdown by Benoit. Is it really a comeback by the original Doink? I heard that Nick Dinsmore was taking over the role for a little while before they debuted him legitimately.

So that means this Doink is not the "original"?
I believe I read on this message board that at least 2 guys played the role of Doink years back. Is this true?

I know that the role of Doink the Clown has been passed down to wrestlers, but I wasn't sure if it was in fact Dinsmore who decided to take the beating from The Brooklyn Brawler at Vengence and from Benoit on Smackdown.

The original heel (and by far the best) Doink was veteren Matt Borne. Once he left, and the character turned face, it was played by journeyman Ray Apollo.
If you want to count all the people who played Doink, Chris Jericho dressed as him shortly before WM 17. I also believe that Steve Lombardi, the Brooklyn Brawler himself, played Doink at some point. In addition, the Bushwackers and Men on a Mission all dressed as Doinks for the Survivor Series.

I have something of a love / hate relationship with Scott Keith's reviews, but I think he hit this whole thing right on the money here:
"It's pretty telling that Cornette spent years building Nick Dinsmore up in OVW as "Mr. Wrestling" and when he gets called up, it's to play DOINK THE FUCKING CLOWN."
Dinsmore is utterly wasted in this.
I'm a huge fan of the original Doink - back when he was a true heel (who then would "shock" his opponents by actually being a solid technical wrestler) - but bringing it back is just pointless because they're not going to do anything with it.

Is the Captain a member of the proud 2%?
I think it is a short time thing. I bet we don't see Doink again. Let us relax.

I think it was more a case of "we want Doink to appear, who do we have that's not appearing yet."

it's the same deal as the guys who wrestled ReyRey and Kidman under hoods a couple of weeks ago- they don't want to job out the OVW guys right out of the gate- so they use them under hoods/Doink makeup to conceal their identity so they're fresh when they "debut"...see also: Hardy Boyz in their various masks, the Headbangers as Flying Nuns, Sheldon Benjamin and Rob Conway on Velocity

Steve "Skinner" Keirn played the second Doink when they were terrorizing Crush.
And I'm sure he'd deny it now, but Jeff Jarrett also appeared in full Doink costume while he was feuding with Doink in 1994. He came out in the Doink costume and picked on Dink.

One of the Doinks used to be a Local 6 carpenter. They work the Jersey City area and surounding Hudson county.
He was there before I got in but one of the older carpenters told me a few stories about how he'd come to meetings in full make-up. I guess maybe that was before me made the big time or right after he was let go.

in 1990 barry windham was the fake Sting who tried to "take a dive" for Flair in the main event of a ppv which I can't recall the name of (wargames?)

Windham came out in Sting makeup during the Sting-Sid Vicious match at Halloween Havoc 1990.
