I just heard on the news that Verizon, Readers Digest, Fruit of the Loom, and a few other big companies are cutting many jobs this week.

So much for those tax cuts, hmm?

Or is this all Clinton's fault? Or are we back to blaming Jimmy Carter?

I honestly hate when I'm right, but guess what?

Alright, I will add something useful: reason.
alternative #1: use the money to CREATE jobsSpending the extra money from the tax cut and child tax credit does just that. The economy rose over 2% this last month and unemployment is down. Only one month, but a nice start, and the tax cuts help.alternative #2: improve educationOne great way to jump-start improving education is to eliminate Tenure for teachers. What a dumb idea that was. Oh, and how about holding kids accountable for learning? All these schools postponing or cancelling proficiency tests has destroyed any value a High School Diploma ever had.alternative #3: better medical coverage
We have the best medical professionals and facilities in the world. Universal health care/socialism would kill that. I'm not going to go on about this one because the usuals will be up in arms again.alternative #4: pay our soldiers a decent wage so most of them arent feeding their families with foodstampsThis is a huge lie that has been spread around by both detractors and proponents of the military. Are there soldiers who use foodstamps? Yes. Is it a large number? No. In fact, I have never met one that does use them. And those that do (and I took an unscientific poll around the office) are those who want to live way above their means or pump out a bunch of kids. Soldiers get paid pretty well, not enough to make them rich or even close, but pretty well. Just like any other job, you have to be fiscally responsible for yourself.alternative #5: pay our police and fire departments betterHow about eliminate some of the police jobs? There's an idea for you. Do you realize that the police are basically leeches on the population? Having some police is a necessity, and I have no problem with them persuing domestic issues and civil crimes like robbery. It's traffic cops that have to go. All of them. They might as well be called Revenue Officers instead, becuase that's their real purpose. Pay them more? Get rid of them and see how much your taxes Dr0p.

The economy rose over 2% this last month and unemployment is down.

Part 1 is right. Part 2 is WRONG.

Even if that turns out to be the case, the job market is likely to remain sluggish economists say. The unemployment rate hit a nine-year high of 6.4 percent in June. It could hover in that range and possibly move higher in the months ahead because job growth probably will not be strong enough to handle an influx of people looking for work amid an improved climate, economists say.

Let me be specific: unemployment claims are down this last month. (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=&e=8&u=/ap/20030731/ap_on_bi_go_ec_fi/economy)

And from the same articlePresident Bush's tax cuts along with near rock-bottom short-term interest rates should help out on that front, economists say. Some are predicting growth in the second half in the range of a 3.5 percent to 4 percent rate.

Analysts believe the combination of lower borrowing costs and fatter paychecks and other tax incentives might spur consumers and businesses to spend and invest more.

Nothing yet. Nobody is suffering because the GNP is down. People are suffering because there are no jobs. And that is, at the moment, still getting worse. So if that turns the corner, then I'll eat crow and say the tax cuts probably have something to do with it. That hasn't happened yet, and although this is a good sign, we've had false starts before.

my mother has been umelployed for a year simply because there are no jobs. at least none that pay well enough so that she can pay her bills. she worked for MCI and with there amazing business practices she became unemployed last august. but she had been going back to school. so even now with a Bachelor's from NYU she cannot find a job. its not that amazing of an idea. but then again u seem to find it frightfully amazing so much so that these ppl should b put on display, and ppl should b charged a fee to see them. so i dont know what to say......

It's real easy to be unemployed for a year.

You let your unemployment run out, then you look for a similar job to yours only to find there are none.

Then you maybe get some new training. That takes time. Or you start to branch out and hunt around, but nothing.

Then you get duscouraged or family obligations pop up. It's amazing what your family can invent for you to do when they start to take for granted that you'l be around all day.

Plus, there are jobs out there but they're go nowhere jobs. It does get to the point where you just need money, but maybe some people are holding out for a job that's worth staying in for awhile. I could waste 3 years of my life pumping gas, but the only advancment would be to work up to the guy who stocks the antifreeze.

Not even close to what I said. It's nice that taxpayers are footing the bill for this time off for your mom. I hope she is somehow trying to repay them by doing volunteer work of some sort. Not an attack, but an observation. Apparently it's preferable to suck from the Teat of State than to take what would seem a "lesser" job, and that seems to be true for millions in this country. A year? 3-6 months should be sufficient for anyone willing to take responsibility for themselves. Go ahead, begin your attacks against me now...

The jobless rate dipped to a two-month low of 6.2 percent from a nine-year high of 6.4 percent in June.Jobless rate goes down in July (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=668&ncid=514&e=2&u=/ap/20030801/ap_on_bi_go_ec_fi/economy). True, there was a decrease in jobs as well during that period, so that helped with the rate. However, jobs are not created instantly and businesses need some time to begin hiring, so this is still a positive indicator of both the economy and the future job market.

I don't want to insult Phixion's mother or disrespect her, so please don't construe it that way. I apologize. I think that a year is too long to be looking for a job, and that's for anyone. I know this isn't a popular position with many here because it requires someone to have personal responsibility, which is anathema to the Left. Jerry proves my point. Instead of getting a job and ending his dependence on free-for-him taxpayer money, he would rather sit on the internet at 5 AM and spew rambling hatred and complain. Instead of saying "yeah, you're right, I need to go get a job" it's flimsy excuses and accusations. Sad.

If you really think somebody can support themselves working at McDonalds, you really are out of touch. Why do you think mainly teenagers and seniors work there?

Berg, you are extremely quick to rush to judgement. I will give you one example why a person might not want to resort to the jobs you speak of. First of all, these jobs are NEVER a long term solution, and they pay crap. So, if one were to take one of these jobs you would likely need to work a shitload of hours, probably over 40, to pay rent. All the while you are supposed to be looking for a real job. So, assuming you have the time to look for these career jobs and send out resumes, what happens when you get an interview on a day you are supposed to work? Retail jobs are not forgiving about absences. I've seen more than one person get fired for missing work for an interview. So, you could be forced choose between the chance of a new job and your current job.

And you are missing something about unemployment payments. Everybody pays into the unemployment insurance system. If you don't work, you can't get it. And you only get it for six months. And what you get is relative to what you have earned. So it isn't exactly "sucking on the teat of government."

Since the subject is unemployment, perhaps this would be a good time to point out that with over 3.6 or 3.7 million jobs lost since he became president, it's looking more and more like Bush will finish his term as the first president since Herbert Hoover to finish the term with less jobs than when he started.

In terms of percentage, when he took over, the unemployment rate was about 4, 4.2%. It's now, what, 6.5%? A 50% jump in unemployment doesn't look so good on one's resume.

first thought that comes to mind is "they should find something for these 6.5 or so million people to do"

it's an impossible dream but it would be nice if these people could clean up fields, parks, lots and put in nice gardens... maybe a cornfield or two...

they could go into the poor neighborhoods and help paint their homes(inside and out) and make the lawns look nice by putting the proper chemicals down, aerating, and seeding.

hopefully this high unemployment is just a cycle, but it seems to me that Corporations and Business owners are learning to live with a leaner workforce. Alot of it has to do with profit margins and trying to get their stock price to go up. There's alot of talk now about white-collar jobs going overseas. It makes me think that the "good times" are over for alot of people and the reality is most if not all of them people are in the middle and lower financial end...

IT spending looks to be a 'low priority", companies are just keeping what they got "going" and Advertisement, which was probably a "hundreds of billions of dollar" business is taking one of the biggest hits. Our company relies on ads(wall street journal) and we've been doing nearly a billion dollars less in business because of it...

I can't believe we're arguing about working at McDonalds. Look, here's some simple facts from their website McDonalds benefits. (http://www.mcdonalds.com/corporate/careers/benefits/health/) Notice that they some pretty decent coverage. Unfortunately I could not find any current information on salaries (I did see that starting wages was from $6-$9 per hour), but found this old (1976) article where a manager is said to make $14,000 per year plus benefits. Here's the article (http://www.fccps.k12.va.us/gm/lasso/lasso-50yrs/golden-arches.htm)
Now, if in 1976 a manager made $14K, I would say that they make considerably more now. This is a silly discussion anyway, since having any job is preferable to doing nothing. Again, I understand limited unemployment for 3 or so months, but a year seems overly picky and/or lazy.

I can't believe we're arguing about working at McDonalds.

Not to bust your chops, but I can't believe you just basically said that anyone who hasn't worked or had a fulltime job for more than three months is being overly picky/lazy. You and I both have NO clue why some people may be without work for certain amounts of time. And hiring times ARE tough, like it or not. There's too many people looking for work and not enough longterm jobs to go around. If you're looking to seriously support yourself and/or anyone else, you canNOT just jump into a job that is probably very temporary, and that's usually what's the most available in these kinds of situations. Jumping from job to job every six months with uncertain and fluctuating pay and benefits (Or lack thereof) isn't going to honestly help anything. I have been literally getting at least half a dozen applications EVERY DAY at my store for over two months now. Out of all those hundreds, I've been able to hire about a dozen. That's just how it's going these days. And that's why our government thankfully has a system devised to HELP people through these kind of temporary situations, not CARRY them. We don't have a static economy, and people are going to get caught in a bad way every time it shifts. It just happens. Why does everything specifically have to be someone's fault? Blame Bush, blame the people out of work...either way, you'd be so wrong it's not even funny.

We just lost 44,000 jobs, actually. The unemployment claims are down, which is what I think is you are talking about. You would know this if you read the thread. You should know this before calling people morons.

I first heard it from that old bastard Paul Harvey on WABC, then I read an article on it linked to the Drudgereport, but now that I mentioned Drudge people will completely dismiss it as crap.

Also, economic growth for the past month was almost twice what it was expected to be.

Who the fuck are you talking to?

If that's some kind of halfassed "answer" to my post (Which didn't even ask anything), what does that even prove in contrast to what I said? It's a shitty job market. 500,000 more jobs doesn't "fix" that. It helps, but it's a step. But it IS still a horrendous job market. Natural economic downturn after the 'net "bubble" burst all over your mom's face. Them's the breaks.

Yes, that's the same report we had in this thread. It was unemployment claims which were down. The economy lost 44,000 jobs. It's all here: Jobless rate dips (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=668&ncid=514&e=2&u=/ap/20030801/ap_on_bi_go_ec_fi/economy) Here's a relevant quote:
The jobless rate declined to a two-month low of 6.2 percent from a nine-year high of 6.4 percent in June. The Dr0p, however, reflected people leaving the work force, not a burst in hiring.
Those close to 500,000 people didn't get jobs. They gave up looking for them.

Mojo, what I actually said wasI understand limited unemployment for 3 or so months, but a year seems overly picky and/or lazy.I can even understand 6 months. After a year, someone with a modicum of self-respect should grow tired of taking taxpayer money. I know the market is terrible right now. There are a few college degree holders currently enlisting because they can't "find" employment. But they have only been looking for a couple of months. Curious, but what do you define by thisour government thankfully has a system devised to HELP people through these kind of temporary situations, not CARRY them. What length of time do you consider temporary?

LC, what you have to understand is that statistics can be easily manipulated to reflect what you want them to reflect. Less people filing for unemployment does not necessarily mean more people are employed.

I'd say six months, but then I always come back to what I had mentioned before...is it better to wait it out and keep looking for a job that can at least somewhat support you and last at least a decent amount of time or to just take a knowingly finite job with pay and benefits (Or a lack thereof) that can't support you or your dependents? That honestly seems to be the most common problem in these kind of situations. In a case like that, bouncing from poor-paying to poor-paying job, which alternative is truly "better"? The whole thing is just too subjective for there to be a clearcut answer.

This Dr0p did not reflect 500,000 new jobs being created or anything like it.
What this statistic really is , is the number of people who've stopped looking for work, presumably out of frustration.
The unemployment figures reflect those who are out of work who are actively looking for a job.

That this president will finish his term with less employment than when he started is stunning.

So 6 months, got it. Why not leave it at that? How long is too long? Is "wait it out and keep looking for a job" the unemployed guy's decision to make? What if that took him 5 years until he met this nebulous criteria? That is the problem here. I have said I support limited unemployment benefits, but there has to come a time when enough is enough and the perpetually work-impaired has to be cut off. If you end their benefits, I am quite sure most will amazingly find a job almost immediately. Instead of more socialism, how about we try a little less for a change.

What if it is 5 years? The point was made, and I feel very reasonably, as long as I'm paying part of my taxes to unemployment, I should be entitled to be on it as long as I need to be. You're talking like cutting people off would push them into an acceptable job. Odds are it would be the same shitty job that wouldn't support yourself, much less anyone else. Cutting someone off doesn't solve anything...it could force someone into an even worse situation than when they were on welfare. Somone simply canNOT support a family on minimum wage or within a few dollars of it...what's the point in forcing someone onto that because their only penalty is that's literally all they could find? You're just creating more poverty.

The key here is that you talk like most welfare users are bausing the system, or are always on the cusp of abusing it, which simply is not the situation with the majority of welfare cases. Maybe you don't mean that, but that's how it comes across.

And why should we have less socialism? It's existed as part of our government since day one. I'll never understand why people like to emntion "socialism" in hushed tones like it's some scary boogeyman. Like most viable political options, it's often used in our country, and aspects of it do work. Some of it does not. But where did this "socialism automatically mean BAD" stigma come from?

I'll never understand why people like to mention "socialism" in hushed tones like it's some scary boogeyman...

It comes from too much Rush, Ollie, and the G-man; from taking their arguments as one's own rather than doing the research on both sides of an issue.
Since Atwater, it has been a Republican tactic to use words like "socialism" and "liberal" together and as epithets. it is a form of psychological warfare.
Nowadays you get around a bunch of ignorant rednecks that benefit greatly from, say, farm subsidies or other social programs pushed by the left, and say something like "...these goddamned liberals..." and they all nod in unison, harrumph in unison, spit tobacco in unison, and adjust their Oshkosh B'Gosh's in unison.
"Liberal" and "socialism" have replaced "godless comminists" in the lexicon of many.
