I don't want to believe this is true (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/story/104689p-94706c.html)

We're really disgusting.

Yeah, I saw that last night on NBC news.

One opponent of this system claimed that terrorists could do a form of "insider trading" by betting on a type of terrorist act and then carrying it out to cash in on it.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is interested in improving on existing techniques for predicting future events and for assessing the issues that underlie and influence what might happen. DARPA has funded the development and operations of PAM. U.S. government agencies will not be allowed to participate in PAM and DARPA will not have access to the identities or funds of PAM traders.

Besides being patently offensive, my guess is this is more libertarian/conservative ideology at work in the current government. The idea of this thing is that, somehow, the private sector, especially market theory, is better at predicting events than government bureaucracy. That may actually be true, but it represents the common fallacy of over-applying market theory - that the profit motive doesn't always serve the public interest. In this case this Pentagon unit seems to have overlooked the point that AJinDC pointed out, that terrorists can cash in on their own attacks, but also that anyone who has information on an attack will be in a position to bet on and thus profit from that attack and would have incentive to withold the information from government authorites. To me it looks like another case of bad ideas coming from ideologues in positions of power. Markets are for making and selling toasters, not fighting terrorism.

If we were a responsible public we'd at least get John Poindexter, (just one of the scumbags from the Iran-Contra operations brought back into government by the administration), the fuck out of the Pentagon, and fired anyone else who thought this was a good idea.

Once again, Yerdaddy has nailed the issue perfectly. Market theory works when information is diffusely spread amongst a population and there are lots of small scale transactions happening within an agreed upon set of rules, not when the only important information is in the heads of that fuck Osama and his Egyptian Dick Cheney. The model becomes almost binary rather than a free market. For all their pretense of being tough-minded realists, our regime seems to be willing to let the fate of our country rest on some articles of faith rather than what's really going on.

To sum up: Yerdaddy for President!

or at least Gov. of California, for a start.

The fact that our government even considered this idea for more than a second is truly sad.

The fact that this is the brainchild of John Poindexter, the man who gave us Iran-Contra and Total Information Awareness, is not surprising.
