All these post about video games brings me to the question of video game cheat codes or enhancers (ex. Video game shark). Do they lessen the gaming experience or enhance it?

Remember: U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R, start. What good is a high score if you use the cheats for 99 lives, unlimited ammo, etc.

Or playing a Role playing game where you're already powered up by using cheats. (Isn't getting there the fun of it too?).

Or playing Sims using the code for gaining money (Rosebud___;!;!;!;!;!;!). Doesn't that cheapen the experience of playing sims?

What do ya'll think?

it depends on the game. if i already beat it, then ill use a gameshark just to breeze through it, and enjoy it. but if its just a hard game, like legend of legaia where the random enemies were a breeze yet the bosses were fucking impossible i needed a gameshark.

I agree in some cases. I own the Sims for both Computer and PS2 and I dont cheat anymore. For the computer I would sometimes cheat because it would be fun to stay at home and have parties. Now that I have The Sims for PS2, it takes the fun out of the game because there accually is a "game". Also, it fucks up the game on PS2.

For Sega I had Game Genie. I used it sometimes. I think cheats are acceptable when you really need them to beat a game... like Splinter Cell. Although there ARE no cheats for the game, if there were, I'd use 'em because the game is very hard.

Then there are also games where you can BUY cheats. Most of the cheats just add a little fun in the game, and cant really help you cheat.

I say sure for the action games and no for the roleplayers.

The idea of a roleplayer is to develope characters and get through tasks. Sometimes you can't beat a boss without 1st getting some item or leveling up, so you should quest to achive this.

But some of these action games get RETARDED hard suddenly. So I would use codes for them

And every now and then you really just wanna blug in DOOM, turn on the God and Ammo codes and blast blats blast!

I only use them if it makes the game more fun or enjoyable.

For sports games I'll use cheats to get a new arena or be able to hit the ball farther when playing a friend. In the case of GTA it does make the game easier but using perfect steering to blaze through the streets and jump cars makes the game more fun to play.

I never use cheats until I've beaten a game. The only time i used cheats in a game I hadnt beat was GTA3. I never did the missions anyway, I just used the unlimited ammo and tank codes and kicked the shit out of people.

This brings up another interesting question though. Do strategy guides/walkthroughs count as cheats? Theyre so available on the internet and often hard to resist. I used walkthroughs only 3 times in my gaming life. For the first Mario game on N64, Metroid Prime, and parts of Zelda: Majora's Mask. I consider them cheats cause even though you have to do the work, as in fighting bosses/enemies and stuff, you know exactly everything thats gonna happen in the game. It takes away the fun of the game and I realized that when I used one for Metroid.

Good question. Yeah, it takes away ALOT from the game since you know what's going to happen next and what actions you need to accomplish to move on.

Remember when Nintendo used to have gaming counselors that you could call when you got stuck or needed help in a game. We called one time (that's my story and I'm sticking to it) to get help in getting to the base in the NES game Metal Gear (there was a certain pattern to get out of the jungle). DAMN....who knew you had to pay for that stuff. Was my parents surprised when they got the phone bill!
