Ok; so we'll be able to maybe see an aurora; and by the way this means a big hole in the sun is shooting out all sorts of hi-energy charged particles and radiation out into space and right to us.

Could be nothing; ofetn however, with a Big solar storm; affected things include anything dealing with satellites ie. ATM; Sat TV and Radio, and Cel Phones, beepers, and oh yeah computer connections.

...ya know 'Night of the Comet' type stuff :)

MIDDLE LATITUDE AURORA WARNING

There is a fair to good chance the "northern lights" may
become visible over middle latitude regions tonight and
possibly tommorrow night.

Effects of a well placed solar coronal hole are producing
favorable solar wind conditions that could lead to the
development of periods of moderately strong auroral
substorm activity during the next 6 to 48 hours.

A middle latitude aurora warning has been issued and is
valid through tonight and tommorrow.
Details follow below.

///////////////////////
MIDDLE LATITUDE AURORAL ACTIVITY WARNING

WATCH ISSUED: 18:20 UTC, 26 JULY 2003

///////////////////////

VALID BEGINNING AT: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
VALID UNTIL: 23:00 UTC (7 pm EDT) ON 28 JULY

HIGH RISK PERIOD: 26 - 27 JULY (UTC DAYS)
MODERATE RISK PERIOD: 26 - 28 JULY

PREDICTED ACTIVITY INDICES: 40, 30, 25, 20 (26 JULY - 29 JULY)

POTENTIAL MAGNITUDE OF
MIDDLE LATITUDE AURORAL ACTIVITY:
MODERATE

POTENTIAL DURATION OF THIS ACTIVITY:
MAIN BELT = 24 TO 48 HOURS
MINOR BELT = 48 TO 72 HOURS

ESTIMATED OPTIMUM OBSERVING CONDITIONS:
PRIOR TO AND NEAR LOCAL MIDNIGHT

EXPECTED LUNAR INTERFERENCE:
NONE, BECOMING LOW AFTER
EARLY MORNING MOONRISE

OVERALL OPPORTUNITY FOR
OBSERVATIONS FROM
MIDDLE LATITUDES:
FAIR TO GOOD

AURORAL ACTIVITY *MAY* BE
OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY
NORTH OF A LINE FROM...

NORTHERN WASHINGTON STATE TO
SOUTHERN MONTANA TO
SOUTH DAKOTA TO
NORTHERN IOWA TO
NORTHERN ILLINOIS TO
NORTHERN INDIANA TO
OHIO TO
PENNSYLVANIA TO
NEW JERSEY.

ACTIVITY *MAY* ALSO BE OBSERVED
APPROXIMATELY
NORTH OF A LINE FROM...

IRELAND TO UNITED KINGDOM TO
NORTHERN NETHERLANDS TO
NORTHERN GERMANY TO
SOUTHERN SWEDEN TO
LATVIA TO ESTONIA TO
NORTHERN RUSSIA

NEW ZEALAND AND SOUTH EASTERN REGIONS OF
AUSTRALIA MAY ALSO OBSERVE PERIODS OF ACTIVITY.

SYNOPSIS...

The leading edge of an anticipated solar coronal hole based
disturbance is producing enhanced solar wind characteristics that
should lead to intensified levels of auroral storming over the next
several hours to perhaps the next 48 hours. There is a good
chance some middle latitude locations could observe periods of
activity over the next few days.

This warning will remain valid through 23:00 UTC (7 pm EDT) on
28 July. It will then be Upd@ted or allowed to expire.

basically it means that from roughly central jersey north is gonna be able to see the northern lights tonight and tomorrow and some satelite funtion may be decreased. no one will die, i dont think

I don't think that I will be able to see this from New York. Where can I go this August to definitely see the Northern Lights? Norway? Greenland?

you can go and buy them, if you go to canada you can find them all over and relatively cheap, like 35 american an eighth. to see araura borialis(sp) you should go to alaska

Oh man. As I was skimming Mike's post I passed over this area and thought I read "solar Cornhole Based Disturbance." I nearly shot Sprite out my nose.

Well; this is a Moderate Storm; but there was a moderate storm in 2000, and two days later.

14 July 2000: Solar Eruption Hits Planet Earth

Earth was blasted over the weekend by one of the most extreme magnetic storms of the current 11-year solar cycle and by the worst solar radiation storm since 1991.

The storms caused problems for satellites, triggered voltage fluctuations in some electric power systems, blacked out radio communications for commercial fishing boats and made the northern lights visible at mid latitudes, including Europe and as far south as St. Louis in the United States.

Within 20 minutes, the flare started blasting space around Earth with an intense barrage of protons known as a solar radiation storm. The flare also triggered a mass ejection of electrified gas from the sun's outer atmosphere, hurling the material toward Earth. It hit at 10:40 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (14:40 GMT) Saturday, triggering a geomagnetic storm that reached category G5, or extreme levels, over high and mid latitudes later in the day.

The barrage of protons spewing off the sun disrupted some satellites and shortwave radio communication and prompted a call to delay a Russian space launch.

S3 solar-radiation storms also can give passengers and crews on commercial jets at high latitudes radiation exposure equal to a chest X-ray. The atmosphere protects people on the ground.

Friday's flare also triggered category R3, or major radio blackout conditions on Earth's daylit side for about two hours. Such blackouts are typified by wide losses of shortwave communications and perhaps hour-long loss of radio contact and degradation of navigation systems for aviators and mariners.

During the storms, solar wind speeds at times reached 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) per second, which is equal to 2.24 million m.p.h. (3.6 million kilometers per hour) -- roughly twice the normal speed of the solar wind.

Wow, am I Chicken Little or What?!
