I referred to a black teacher I was in a graduate class with as a black woman and she bit my friggin' head off.

Then the professor referred to her as a "person of color" and was immediately eviscerated.

Lastly, a person said African American and she nearly "pulled a Trinity" on his ass.

She is a woman with melanin that creates a brown tinge to her skin.

It was in the context of a graduate school classroom and we were discussing the manner in which teachers should approach grammar instruction in the classroom.

The article we read was "Black English" and cited that fact that all people, ALL people, have a cultural dialect and grammar that is valid and developed outside of the typical Warriner's Grammar instruction.

I said that recognizing and validating individual grammars and dialects is perfectlt fine BUT what about the "language of power" in the United and States. That language follows traditional grammar instruction.

She did not like that. I said that I want Black Americans to be successful and she proceeded to verbally attack me.

I am saying that I want to empower students and she wants to go crazy over semantics.

Lastly, if I knew her name was Dametra, I WOULD have called her that. I don't like being titled either, but I understand why people fall back on generalities--to then move to specific names.
