What happens to the dirt when a cat cleans itself?

I'm watching my cat clean itself yesterday, you know the old lick the paw, rub it behind the ear, lick the paw routine and it got me to thinking. Where does the dirt go? If there is, lets say uhhhh, I don't know sand, sand in the cat's fur and it goes about its cleaning business, is it swallowing the sand? I can only assume that's what it is, but it really doesn't seem like it would be healthy for the animal to be swallowing sand, or any foreign material for that matter.

Then they lay on my clothes.

My cats swallow everything, including threads and strings from clothing. When they shit, it hangs out of their ass by a thread and I have to pull the rest of it out, much to Bucky and Curly's dismay. Once I pulled a string almost a foot long out of Curly's ass.
