View Full Version : Magic Markers: Genericide or not?

This is actually a two parter. First off, what is the word for when a brand name, a la Rollerblades, Xerox, Kleenex etc, becomes the generic term for any product in that category. "Genericide" is all I could find, but I think that's legalese. I'm sure I learned another term for it in English class at some point.
The second part is this. Have magic markers turned that corner yet? Do you refer to any marker as a magic marker, or is it still just a marker?
*EDIT: Alright look, a large part of my job is driving. I have to go to many different places, most of which are far away. Since radio sucks these days I have very little else to do with my time than think about shit like this. Leave me alone and answer the Goddamn questions.*

Not much to say but in the 4th Grade(when i started to lose interest in schoolwork) I would bring my magic markers and doodle during class. UNTIL Sr Patricia threw them across the room like Brett Favre, and made me go to the Principal's Office.
i loved my magic markers.

blakjeezis is a loser with too much time on his hands!
Anyway, no. I don't call eveyr marker a magic marker. It's just a marker. I think Sharpie has a better chance of being the generic term.

On side note about Brett Favre, I was reading ESPN Magazine earlier this week and they had an article in there about Packers receiver, Donald Driver, or some shit like that. He told a story about how once he told Favre he threw like a girl, just having some fun talkin' shit in practice. Favre threw the next pass so hard it broke Driver's finger when he caught it. I am by no means a Packers fan, the Green Bay variety anyway, but Favre is the fuckin' man.

There was always two kinds of markers for me when I went to grade school, and that was Magic Markers, which were your crayola type colored markers, and then there were permanent, which came in limited colors, but were the ones that you would have to use when there was nothing else. Plus the smell was pretty cool.

I loved the Magic Markers that smelled of fruit. The yellow smelled of lemon, blue of blueberry, orange of orange, etc.

I think everyone agrees to call all colored wax in a stick wrapped in paper is a "crayon" without a brand in mind. Im not sure, but I think that the name Magic Marker may be patented, but everyone refers to things like that as a type of product. When a brand becomes so popular, the brand becomes associated with the item. I ask for a "Coke" or "Scotch tape" or a "Post it Note" without thinking of a brand.

I know what you're saying BJ, don't worry, you're not a loser. ;)
I just call them markers so I don't have much to say about that. I HAVE noticed though that people say Kleenex instead of tissues. The big thing that bothers me down in Texas at least is that they call ALL brands of soda Coke. Then they ask what kind of 'Coke' you want. Now that's just stupid.
