View Full Version : menus should really be more accurate

ok, first off i'd like to say that i don't like this thing where your subject line has to be a certain length. goddamn it, you people are stifling my topic title creativity. bleah.
anyway, here's the deal. i do not eat pineapple. not under any circumstances do i enjoy it, be it alone, mixed in a fruit salad, in a pina colada, or whatever. i've felt this way about the pineapple since i was little. it tastes godawful, and is the scariest fruit known to man. so i avoid the pineapple in all its forms like the plague that it is.
i am very careful to read the ingredients of things before i buy or order them, so that i know i won't be served anything with pineapple in it. when a menu doesn't provide a description of an item, i won't get it unless i'm certain that it will not contain any pineapple. i'm sure you all know where this is headed...
last night, i was at a restaurant which had a menu with fairly detailed names for all of the dishes; these were the types of names that enumerate all of the things that would be served. so i ordered the "soy protein with spinach roll and jade mushrooms." sounded pretty specific to me. i had no clue that there were little diced up pineapple pieces floating around in there. and, unfortunately, i had the displeasure of eating one of these pieces. after all these years, i have now confirmed that i still detest the pineapple. i really wanted to spit it out, or puke, but i felt it would be inappropriate at the table and all, so i just took one for the team and swallowed it. it really ruined my whole mean for me.
so, in summation, i think that restaurants should be more careful about how they represent the food that they will be serving. if you're going to provide a description of what's in the food, be exhaustive about it. don't give innocent diners the impression that they know what they're getting when they don't. i implore all you restaurant people to follow my advice. thank you.

Why don't you just ask if there's pineapple, or something else you may not like, in it? The menu would be like thirty pages long if they gave a complete run down on all the ingredients of every dish.

I agree with Arienette. I'll assume that pineapple may be one of those things that some people are allergic to, and therefore it should be noted when one is used in a recipe, even for flavoring. My brother has spent his life asking people if there's any walnuts or hazlenuts in things cause he's allergic. Unfortunately, as carguy said, it's usually impractical to write out every thing in a recipe, and therefore when trying something new, it's a good idea to ask just to make sure.

my sister is highly allergic to nuts, so going out to dinner growing up was always an adventure. Ari, next time, if they bring you somethign like that, politely spit it out into your napkin, call the waiter over and tell him you are highly allergic to pineapple, explain that the menu said pineapple nowhere on it, and see about ordering something else.

i would just add that hopefully you requested a different meal. i would believe if you told them a little fib like youwere allergic to pineapples, they would've been okay with it...
if not, maybe an idea if it happens again...

You can't go asking the waiter about every item every time you go out for dinner. People will call you "that crazy pineapple guy" or somesuch. You just have to make an educated guess as to whether or not an item would generally have pineapple in it. Obviously, the rules are a bit different if you're highly allergic to something.

i'll bet she was popular in high school
yeah, I agree that they should've put that in the menu....and I am allergic to a couple of things and I would feel like an idiot asking if they are in there....that must've sucked because I am sure you wanted to send it back but then again you don't want to wait and then hold up everyone else b/c they will prob. be done eating when you are just starting

Did the waiter draw a big heart on your doggie bag?like i'd take that swill home with me... but i did get a double heart bagel the other day, so there.
that must've sucked because I am sure you wanted to send it back but then again you don't want to wait and then hold up everyone else b/c they will prob. be done eating when you are just starting exactly, i was there for someone's birthday, so i would never hold everyone up like that. what was worse was that my food was not inexpensive. it doesn't seem like such a big deal if you can't eat your food when it's cheap. oh well.

Im always afraid to send food back, I always assume they sneak a little "cream of sum yung guy" in there or SARS or something. I keep seeing that scene from that Tom Green movie and the french toast!

This is the meal you order, yet pineapple disgusts you? To each his own, I guess. But anything that is usually called a curd isn't appealing to me.
But excuse me, I need to go finish my Tropicana Pure Premium Orange Pineapple Juice before it gets warm.

I have a similar problem with fresh mushrooms.
I love-em cooked, but decades ago when I was 3 or 4, some older kids got me to eat some poisonous toadstools.
I had to get my stomach pumped at the hospital and I think I tripped.
To this day, even a tiny morsel of fresh, uncooked mushroom sends my body into a sort of seizure for a second and I get feverish and sick to my stomach.

Be careful when you order cole slaw (if you like it) -- I've seen some places that add crushed pineapple to it.
