View Full Version : Bill Maher's New Special Sucks
I know what you're thinking. This isn't big news. But after watching Maher's and Dennis Miller's new specials I have one question: When did they stop being comedians and just start using their specials to get on a soapbox and spout their views. I usually don't care when celebrities go political, but these guys are supposed to be COMEDIANS! Could you preach on your own time please?

Maher was never funny to me(huge ego) but has always been political, or as far as i've known of him...
dennis miller is probably the nicest guy in the world but one of the most "unfunniest" if he wasn't labeled as a comedian and was just a talkshow host, then he would be somewhat funny. to me he doesn't come close to the expectation.
i always feel a little foolish being critical, they are the one's on TV and making oodles of money.
then again, fuck it...

First of all, Bill Maher just strikes me as the kind of guy who lives off of striking a nerve. He says controversial things, knowing it will piss off most people and generate some buzz. I actually liked the concept for PI, I just hate him. Here's a guy who calls himself a Libertarian, then calls for gun control, criticizes American dairy farmers, and rails against the privatization of Social Security and Bushes tax cuts. On a show taped shortly before the Iraq conflict, he said that due to the no-fly zones, Saddam is little more than the "Mayor of Baghdad". On a subsequent show that was taped after the fall of Baghdad, he criticized Tommy Franks for giving a press conference in one of Saddam's palaces, calling it "The Iraqi White House". On one occasion he plays down the significance of Saddam's political role in Iraq (And with the exception of Stalin, no man in history was a more visible leader, shoved down the throat of those he ruled, than Saddam Hussein,) and yet on another occasion he makes it clear that in his opinion, the rule of the Hussein regime is one that the Iraqi people respect and the coalition should respect.
Dennis Miller is, was, and always will be one of the funniest people on the planet. I'll admit that his special could have been better (maybe that's just because his HBO show is such a tough act to follow), but he is one of the hottest guys in the politcal humor business right now.

Garofalo, Mahr, Miller...political comedians or comedians who become politically-minded are NOT funny.
Historical comedians? Well, that's another thing. Eddie Izzard alone shows how friggin' funny that shit is...
Miller gets attention because he SOUNDS smart. But really, he's as empty, useless and shallow as any other pundit. Useless.

Well, political or not, Garofalo was NEVER funny. She has happened to worm her way into the comedy circles of The State, Denis Leary, and Colin Quinn, but that's just about the only thing she has going for her.

Well, I thought she was hilarious on "The Ben Stiller Show" back in the day...but since then and other than that one show, it's pretty much been all downhill.

I have no problem with political comics. Lewis Black is my favorite comic and he does a lot of political stuff. The difference is he makes the audience laugh. Maher and Miller, in their specials, were more concerned with getting a round of applause then getting laughs.
I too thought Dennis Miller Live was hilarious. But I don't think there was one actual joke in his special. He just preached and preached and preached.

I do agree with HBox's point on this.
I can enjoy political humor done right even if they're bashing my party or not. The Daily Show is an example. They bash Bush on every stupid thing he says, but they make fun of the Dems and anyone else in the world news saying stupid things.
I don't have HBO, but I remeber Mahr and he IS the king of all assholes. No real tallent or humor. I think Nydragons and the rest had a fair estimate of his act.
I like Miller when I can follow his refrences. He comes off a little "too good for the room" sometimes, but I always thought he was funny.
Gerofalo was funny in the different stand-up shows I've seen on TV, but she seems to have become less funny in the past few years. I think she's just a little too old for her Gen-X conedy now. It's funny coming from someone who is your peer, not your mother.

Good point.
I don't find anything funnier than "The Daily Show" these days, and it's nothing but politcal humor.
And on a related note...one of the best pieces Colbert did for "The Daily Show" in the past year was when he was investigating the renovations at Dick Cheney's house in the DC suburbs. The "official" source was a hardassed Navy liason, and at the end Colbert carried the liason out in his arms as the staff applauded a la "An Officer And A Gentleman". Well, that guy was my roommate's uncle, and I was just at his retirement ceremony the other day. I was trying so friggin' hard not to laugh the whole time because of that damn Colbert piece.

Yea, Colbert is MONEY on that show. I like him as a replacement host more than Stewart most nights.
And the newer staff have really stepped up recently. The new guy that does the technology reports and the bald guy who always takes his shirt off are great.

My favorite segment on the Daily Show is Even Stevens. When Corell and Colbert are just screaming at each other in the begining I always crack up. They both talk so egotistically it is just hilarious. The best one was Islam vs. Christianity. The way they came together at the end through their suspision of the "crafty jews" was classic.

In reference to Bill Maher, it was when PI moved from Comedy Central to ABC.
As for the Daily Show, I'd rather watch reruns of Futurama on Adult Swim.

On the subject of "The Daily Show", I don't watch it regularly, not out of any dislike, just because I don't watch it, I don't know I have something else to do then or whatever. I digress. I flipped it on the other day and I saw "The Mess of Potamia" on the graphic behind Jon Stewart's head. I'm not sure if they're using this for all their post-war Iraq coverage or if it was a one-shot deal, but nevertheless I would like it to be known that I coined that phrase over three years ago. That's right, your favorite Messiah and mine, Blakjeezis, invented the phrase "Mess of Potamia".
Thank you.
P.S.
- I was also the first person to refer to Biggie as The Notorious N.I.G.
