the a/c in my car doesnt work. It just needs some fluid. mY mechanic says he cant fix it unless he changes it to a new system he says the cant use the old style fluid. is he right or is he trying to rip me off?

no, he is right. AC used to use frion, which is very hazardous and thus no longer used. thats probably what you have. your gonna pay alot cause its a hazmat and must be disposed of properly. suck it up cause ya got no choice

The old R-12 freon hasn't been made in about ten years or so. It put holes in the ozone. There is still a small supply left over from before it was outlawed. You need a license to buy it and it costs a fortune. Of course if you go to a really shitty hole in the wall parts store and ask for "cold beers" they might be able to help you. Chances are your old system is leaking anyway so you'll just be pissing away your money if you do that. The conversion to the newer R-134a isn't all that expensive and is cheaper in the long run. The only way your mechanic is screwing you is if he hits you up for a disposal fee for the old refridgerant. It's probably all leaked out already.

Aren't you the guy who wanted to make his car faster? Ditch the a/c, it only robs power. Get rid of the smog pump too while you're at it.

i agree with carguy. just get rid of ur AC. just wind ur windows down. thats what i do. unless u hafta bake out the car. then winding up the windows is necessary, and it will b hot as hell. park in the shade. ha ha

Over by Shea stadium, I got "new gas" for my "old system" as well as it checked for leaks for $70. I'm sure carguy knows the area if he's from NY. I seem to get good deals on windshields and exhaust systems too.

You can get the kit to do it yourself for like $20 at Pep-Boys. It's not hard to do at all.
