I remember having the little machine that allowed you to simulate the tone a quarter makes to use the payphone for free. It was a huge hit when I was in college and people had to use a payphone to call down to the city. Actually, you could set the tone for a nickel, dime, and quarter. Also, there was something I used to do with putting a piece of metal on the center hole in the mouthpiece then connecting the other end to a hole on the metal plate on the payphone. Don't ask, I was into the whole Anarchist thing.

Its is my deep seeded hatred and utter contempt for human life that gets me through each day

We used to just dial the number on the phone, no area code.
If you hung up fast enough, with some pay phones, they'd start ringing, and wouldn't stop till someone picked it up.
There was one in my neighborhood that we'd do that to, and we'd go off and come back much later and it would still be ringing.
Cool, huh?

Oh I used to do this trick too, but I totally forgot the code. Fuck, I don't even know how much payphones even cost now.

we would dial the operator and say "Operator, this is NJ Bell, can i have a ringback?" Then we'd pick up and yell "didn't i tell you i was sleeping god dammit" or "Joes Pizza, what's your order" or some other stupid thing...

all these methods no longer work, as stated by chicken hawk.

but there was a certain thing a long long time ago where you wou8ld take this whistle you would get from a box of captain crunch and after you pick up the phone and hear the dialtone, you'd blow the whistle. the frequency would allow you to call anyone anywhere for however long for free.

also in the early 90s, you used to be able to take a small minitape recorder and record the sound from the earpiece of the phone as you Dr0pped in 5 dollars in quarters. after the 5 dollars was in you'd stop recording and then hang up the phone, thus getting the 5 dollars back. then whenever you wanted to make a call you'd take the tape recorder and play the tone in the mouthpiece of the payphone, thus getting you free calls

note: none of these work these days

I completely forgot what the code was, but we had a phone in the gym of my grade school. We made it ring and the gym teacher picked it up because he was waiting for his girlfriend to call. That dial tone must've really screwed with his head.

I remember pranking the operators from pay phones as a kid. I called and asked for Richar Hertz. When that didn't yeild any results, I asked he to look under Dick. THEN she got it and told me to "Hang up the phone right now!"

I remember walking away from the pay phone a little scared a cop was gonna roll up, like operators have a panic button next to them to get the federales on you at a moments notice. Kids are stupid!

I just dialed 9580 on my phone and it announced back my #. When I was young, it was 958, I guess they added the zero. Thats the only trick I know with phones. I dont even want to describe the dangerous things I did at railroad tracks as a kid.
