View Full Version : Can You Take a Compliment?

Often, when I do something for somebody, they compliment me on my talent or professionalism or whatever. I immediately blow them off and say something stupid like it was dumb luck or some such nonsense. I can't seem to accept that people may really appreciate what I can do for them. I know what my limitations are and also what my talents are but I'm more quick to point out my deficincies than to admit that maybe I did a good job.
My wife and mom were always getting ticked off at me whenever I would put myself down but I can't seem to get over it. Does anyone else feel this way? I know that I can do certain things very well but I don't want to be recognized for it- what the hell is that all about???

I always think someone who compliments me is just kidding. I thank them for the compliment just to be nice, but I still think they're full of shit.

I can take a compliment to a certain degree. When people begin to get carried away with complimenting me at times, then I feel awkward. I think its good to maintain some humility. There is always someone better at doing something that you can perform as well, and I think its better to aspire to do better things in the future. Kind of like self-motivation, I guess. Still, I prefer compliments rather than pointed criticisms. Constructive crticism is fine, but when people seek to humiliate others out of viciousness, well, that's a whole other story.

See Ya!

If I ever get a compliment, I sorta feel like I cheated them into saying thanks. Then, if I dont get one, I'll mutter a smart ass remark... but I dont mean it seriously. The only time I really would get pissed if they didnt say thanks is if I helped someone solve a big problem, or if I did somthing like loan them a large sum of money.

sometimes i don't take them well, or just accept them and say Thank You. I'll have to immediately reciprocate(sp?) and there are sometimes i say something that makes no sense. i find i don't accept compliments well when their directed at my guitar playing. i believe they are sincere and it probably sounded fine but i know i'm at a level where there are vasts room for improvement. I've noticed it's a pretty common habit with most guitar players, regardless of their level of skill.

This i not a compliment but there are times when someone says "Hi" and i say "good, and how are you doing" ...

I used to be guilty of this same thing but then I realized that I was assuming everyone was lying to me and that's just silly. Plus, I found this little thing called self-confidence that has made accepting compliments a lot easier (it took awhile to get here and I'm still working on it).

I still have issues about not complimenting the person back though. I will smile and say thank you (and feel all fuzzy inside) but then I feel like I need to compliment that person and make them feel as warm and fuzzy as I do.

But don't argue, just try and take a deep breath, smile and believe what they told you because chances are it's 100% right :)

Aggie is right. It's all about self-confidence. Whenever I get a compliment, I give a sincere "Thank You" back to that person. It will make you look confident, therefore, more attractive, even more respected to that other person. Because, in a sense, you are validating that person's jusdgement. And everybody likes to be "right".

"Compliments", "Self-confidence", what language are you all speaking? It all sounds like French to me.

You're right Hosp. Now that I think about it, almost every guy I've complimented from the board has to be convinced that I'm serious. People won't waste their breath if they don't mean it, at least I won't.

And Yerdaddy, you're right, after I lowered myself being with you there was no going back.

I do a lot of technical work around the office and gets lots of compliments for it. It's nice that they do it, but I'd rather get money or a raise as a sign of appreciation. Generally I thank them for the compliment though. I do agree though that if someone is overly complimentary to me, generally I know that I'm just about to be given a new task/headache to deal with.

I love gettin compliments cause inside i can think just how wrong this person is thinkin im deserving of the compliment when whatever i did to merit that compliment was probably me tryin to get laid. alright all that kidding aside, it depends on the compliment. if i do something for someone, i dont get embarrassed if they compliment but if they compliment something i cant control, like looks or something, sometimes i get embarrassed. it depends who as well, if some 22 yr old girl tells me i look good ill except it but if its like grandma with a cheek pinch its embarrassing.

Silent Bob you one rude motherfucker, she like to go down on you, suck you. line up 2 other guys and make like a circus seal

i always figure its a 50-50 chance that either theyare genuine, or they are trying to sell me something. i dont pay much mind to it, but am usually polite. although my favorite one was when i went down on this girl i used to date (it had been about 5 years since we broke up) and she did that whole arched back, clawing the bedsheets, spasming violently. and after it was over she was like..."holy shit, when did you learn to do that?" thats all the ego stroking i need to stay happy.

Often I wonder if they're really sincere or just mouthing the words just to be nice. I look for more than just a short phrase or cliche.
In my carpentry, sometimes i'll pull a slick one that I know only other carpenters will notice, and when they do, the feeling is incredible.
In my fine art, sometimes it's annoying when someone tries to compliment me, but it comes out wrong and they don't know what the fuck they're talking about and I end up insulted, but just for a second. I try to see what they meant to say or the heart behind it. Usually they're just trying to be nice and I'm grateful.
I have a nice move I use sometimes when I get complimented. I'll clutch my hands together behind my back, twist my body as I look down as if to blush, and kind kick away an imaginary stone on the ground by my feet, as I say: "Awwww, shucks!"
Chicks dig it, and it puts them at ease.

" and they ask me why I drink"
