they dont use electricity, and they dont leave. they cant go to any place that uses electricity either, so no to the comps and vacations. they hate pictures because they believe pictures can freeze your soul like the do the picture. i dont know about the black thing.

They're not "given" anything. They leave the farm for a year, at the end of which, they decide to give up amish life or to return to the farm for the rest of their lives.

I've gone to Lancaster Co. about 10 times since 1990. I'm amazed with these people. You'd think I'd be able to answer a few questions, right? Well, I am friends with a few menonites (for those of you who dont know, they're the ones with the tv and the electric, but they sort of worship the same Amish religion.)

Amish may or may not have farms. Most of them DO run their own business... usually a family business.

Amish are allowed to use electronics that require batteries, but nothing that requires a wall socket. Therefore, most Amish own a cellphone (if you go to Lancaster, PA, you will see a lot of cell phone towers)

If an Amish guy has a menonite friend, the friend is allowed to drive the Amish guy places in his pickup

People with permission (like the guys who take the pictures for the post cards) are allowed to take pictures of Amish... I think this permission is granted by the head of the "parrish"

On rare occassions Amish will travel away from a 20 miles ratius of their home, but you will never really see an Amish guy with a buggy in metro NY.

The Amish are all over the US, but the most popular torist spot in Lancaster PA. There is a small part of upstate NY where Amish live.

And my little disclaimer: Amish parishes decide their own rules. Therefore, many of our tellings may be based on different parishes. Like maybe a parish will say that you're not allowed to own a cell phone, ect.

And trashy/cheesy, I would be interested to know where you visit, because we've probably been to the same place, seen eachother, or even stayed in the same place.

I visited Pennsylvania and saw the AMISH! WOW. I went to Longwood Gardens and there were many amish people that day there when I went. I also went to Lancaster County and also the Lost Caverns. The buggys that the Amish people ride in are VERY VERY small but they fight like up to 8 people in it! Also they do ALOT of walking, barefoot too! When I was in Strasburg, I saw Amish children riding scooters (the one's where you push off with one leg). God, those AMISH people are amazing. Don't think I could be Amish, not even for 1 day.

I thought I knew about Amish culture from talking to Amish on trips to Lancaster.

Then I spoke to someone who converted to the faith and gained a better perspective.

The best perspective I've heard came from an Amish atheist who rejected not only the Amish way of life, but God entirely. (Not at 18, but later in life - around 40). Yes he was shunned by his family, but only by his family. He continued to work and live in the area and was very civil to other Amish, and they to him. If his parents and siblings would accept him, he'd be a happy man.
